Why is it that our darlings always need the Vet out of hours on a Bank Holiday.

Poor Jozi had a rather full boob (must have favoured the other side during the night) and I have been making sure to put pups on it and doing the hot flannel treatment since late morning and the engorgement has ceased dispersing and is now the size of a Goose egg and the duct must be blocked as pups no longer seem happy to suck on it and I can't get much out.

So off to emergency vet at 6.30.  they told me it will be £85 before any treatment.

Her pups are 10 days old now so going longer between feeds.

Oh Barbara :(  These things are meant to try us!  Makes me laugh when people say dog breeding is a piece of cake and how we must all be rolling in money!.... wish they could see this now.

Good luck with her, I'm sure she'll be fine.

Well I would like to know how, without food or any out of the ordinary expenses (not her first litter) the expenses are already over £900 and that is without ay food counted yet, or Vet treatment as such.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 26.12.06 19:33 UTC
eture, and it is very hard to get anything out of the affected boob.  Vet gave her an antibiotic jab and anti- inflamatory, with orders to follow up at my own vets tommorrow.  So tat was £96 with more at my own vets to follow.

Thankfully she has come home starving so appetite unaffected, adnhappy to let pups suckle.

I am to keep up the hot flannel compresses.

Typical, why couldnt she have waited another 24 hours ;)
Hope you get the infection sorted quickly, sounds like your going to be in for a very long night!!!

Sort of.

I wanted Lexi to have girls so I could keep one, and Jozi to have handsome boys so I could use one on Lexi pup down the line.

Jozi had her pups 10 days ago, 3 boys and 4 girls.

Lexi looked to be having no more than half the number of her Mum, and to our shock produced 8 pups on 20th, but sadly we lost one of the 3 bitches, and there are five boys.

Do I get a choice of two pups.  Whoever has pick bitch from Jozi gets a choice of four, and of the boys choice of 3 or five.  So I get least choice, so lets hope the to girls are so nice that it doesn't matter :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.12.06 23:09 UTC
Would it not work out much the same if you kept a bitch from Jozi's litter and a dog from Lexi's?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 26.12.06 23:19 UTC
Not really as the bloodline from Lexi's mate is  one chance deal, wheras if the plan with the male doesn't come off (people often change their minds about lettng their dog be used) then I have access to either another son of Jozi's or another son of her mate as he is has been imported and has/will be used on other bitches.

So, Barbara, bumping this one up a bit - you ended up with a choice of 2 bitches from your Finnish adventure - are the girls looking good, to make it worth your while?

Yes, keep an eye on it Barbara, even with antibiotics it can still turn bad, my vet gave antibiotics and told me to dry up her milk, which I did  not agree with at the time, I was wrong and subsiquent opertions ended up costing me £1,000. It is very rare to go so bad and hopefully your girl will clear up nicely, I have my fingers crossed for her.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.12.06 09:51 UTC
Lord I want her to continue feeding as pups only 11 days old!

Got an appointment at 11am at my own Ves, but a locum :( , as my Vet is away until after new year.  they aren't having an evening surgery this week.
- By freespirit10 Date 27.12.06 12:53 UTC
Good luck.

I had this back in August with a bitch and she was bad. Cost me over £2000 and I had to bottle feed puppies from 13 days old!!!

Good luck with your girl and my thoughts are with u
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.12.06 13:39 UTC
Well I won't e eating Tomato soup anytime soon.

Took her to my Vets and the locum lady was really first class.

I had not been able to get anything off the gland, but she managed to get things going, and once it did we got a fair bi.  she then sent us t an anteroom to practice and get more off her, which we did with aid of hot flannels, until actual milk started running.

We now have a course of AB's to last us until Tuesday morning, and metacam, just enough to do good, but not enough to affect pups.

Thankfully she is still happy to Nurse the pups, and they have avoided the affected gland since last night (not surprised)

Hi Barbara!
So glad youve had some positive News and progress :D
*Finger crossed* for Jozi, she's doing ever so well considering isnt she!
Best wishes for Both Jozi,Lexi and the little uns! (cant wait to see pics!)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.12.06 13:59 UTC
Must get to grips with my new camera then, but just haven't got around to it yet.
- By Carrington Date 27.12.06 15:52 UTC
That is great news :-)

So glad it is not the serious type that myself and dogcrazy666 had resulting in hand rearing, a vet will only tell you to dry up the milk if they see it is needed and in-coming milk is going to cause more problems and blockage, which I unfortunately took no heed of, never hearing of it before.

Hopefully all will settle down with your girl now and the teat will go back to normal. Still must be painful for her bless, I remember when I had it.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 28.12.06 01:32 UTC
Well checked her again just now and the lump is about a third of wht it was and nowhere near as solid.  Hopefuly I can drain more 'soup' off it in the morning.
- By Carrington Date 28.12.06 10:11 UTC
Fantastic news! :-)
- By freespirit10 Date 28.12.06 15:38 UTC
When we had this it ended in an ulcer and then it burst so I know what u mean about soup, I was lucky a friend was here as I was nearly sick and thought I was gonna pass out.

Glad to hear your girl is doing much better.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 28.12.06 16:20 UTC
Well looks more like cream of chicken soup now, so going the right way.
- By JaneG [gb] Date 27.12.06 15:55 UTC
Really glad you got that gland going (even if I wished I hadn't read the tomato soup comment )  Hope she recovers quickly. Your prompt action has probably saved the day :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.01.07 19:17 UTC
Well today is the last day of Antibiotics (6th day to cover the Bank Holiday) and the glands are all normal, pups doing well, though haven't gained quite as well as they might have (but perfectly acceptable amount) , as their four day younger nieces and nephews have caught them up weight wise, but they are real porkers.

Mum has lost that exhausted look, but she is so laid back about her pups.  Her daughter is far more attentive and I believe if given the option would mother both litters, and her Mum would let her :D.
- By JaneG [gb] Date 01.01.07 19:22 UTC
Great News Barbara :D  I suppose with pups so close together age wise it may have been possible to foster the other puppies onto their sister had Mum not recovered so well? Have you put updtaed pics on your website of all the gorgeous babies??
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.01.07 19:25 UTC
Well they are just slug like, but there are a couple.

Once the eyes are open on them all will have to take individual ones.
- By JaneG [gb] Date 01.01.07 19:24 UTC
Ohhh I've just looked, how on earth do you get anything done with all those gorgeous little bundles to watch... beautiful babies, well done :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.01.07 19:26 UTC
Pst, I don't!!! :eek::cool::rolleyes:
- By JaneG [gb] Date 01.01.07 19:29 UTC

- By Ems Mum [gb] Date 01.01.07 21:25 UTC
