hi all
just wondering what types of bait do you use when training with pups

i have tried salami sausage , and smackos , and no interest luckily at the show the other day a friend came over with a big bowl of chicken and i used that and he loved it but looking for more idea's

does anyone make their own treats

I used cooked liver and chicken when they were puppies, though to be honest mine will eat anything :P

the thing is i use the salami at home and he loved it but yet at the show he had no interest but the minute he got the chicken he loved it ,
lil on the other hand would eat you out of house and home

We have used coachies, tinned hot dog sausages cooked and then sliced up and cheese - Hamish loves his food and therefore all of those treats!  I beleive Jan Fennel (of Dog Listener fame) advises cheese.

I used to fry liver, chop it and dry it in the oven.  Nowadays, I usually buy some Mattesons (sp?) sausage - doesn't get quite so yucky under the finger nails!!

I've used the tinned hotdog sausages, but found them just a bit too easy to eat so they didn't last long enough whereas i could hold onto the chicken/liver while they nibbled it from my fingers - useful for a 'stand' or coaching them 'down'  :)

train at home with just some basic bait - even just a biscuit, then use special things like ham chicken or cheese at a show - just makes being in the ring more of a special treat

I use Liver just whack it in the microwave for 10mins then cut up into chunks mine cant resist it and they really arent food motivated at all but liver gets them every time...

Make sure you have pockets tho as i once drove home shattered and fell into bed woke up next morning with 2 chunks of sweaty liver in my bra!! :rolleyes:

I use liver & garlic cake (google it and there are loads of recipes), or chicken, or ham, or cheese. :-)

We don't use any bait in the ring - it seems to be a breed specific thing - which can be distracting/upsetting to non-baited breeds (I'm not getting at anyone :D it's a comment) when you follow a baited breed in the ring OR stand next to a baited dog in Varieties as it can greatly affect dogs that are not baited. It is the same with folk using 'squeaky toys' etc..

I find other people using bait is great for keeping my boys attention and keeping him still ;)  Very annoying though when bait is left on the floor :rolleyes:

Meatballs always works on my dogs. Or shall I say my breed, as I don't know any RRs that would reject a meatball in the ring :p
I cut mine into smaller pieces, but I know handlers that can make one meatball last through a class of ten dogs :-) 
Liver works fine too, I just don't like the smell of cooking liver all that much

I love the person in front of me baiting its double handling without the hassle :D i only bait while being gone over :D

Never used bait it makes a dog obssessive about it in the ring, nothing worse than a dog than a dog 'pushing' its nose into it's handlers hand and shuffling about whilst the judge tries to go over it and then a mouthful of food covered teeth - yeuch.

It all depends on how and when it's used.  I agree with the pushing the hand bit - not only does it get in the way when going over the dog but it also detracts from the dogs' overall outline when stacked IMO.  In my breed we bait but free stand.  The bait is given to the dog when the others are being gone over or when the judge isn't looking.  If you do it this way, when you want the dog to stand and be alert you only have to put your hand in your pouch or pocket.   Gotta do something to keep those ears up :d

Clairey, that's why I don't follow the advice I sometimes get to throw the bait in the air and catch it, as I know I would drop it!!!
