Opened a new box of pigs ears 50 plus enclosed a few days ago and yesterday I felt sick there were maggot type insects all over the bottom of the box eating away at the ears it was alive with these horrible things, I will be going into pets at home tommorow to get a refund should I also contact the supplier?

you will probably find they are the larvae of grain moths.  I used to work in a pet shop, they used to come in as eggs in the parrot treats and then eat their way through sacks of dog food etc and would turn up in the most unusual places.  We decided in the end to clear the shop, everything went (most of it to my parents garage as I kept a vast array of animals at the time) we claimed damages on said bird treat companies insurance.  Now 8 years later my parents are still finding these moths and larvae in their garage   I would take them back to PAH, I doubt they came with the pigs ears.

Yuk!  How horrible, I would be taking them back too.  Can you tell whether there are any holes on the underside or surroundings of the box. If not, contamination has happend at the factory, therefore they would need contacting.

Even if there are outwardly signs, the manufacturer would need to know there is a problem with storage either on route or at Pets At Home, it is their product after all, and if your dog had become ill they would have been the first port of call for any legal action, so they do need to know.

Lucky you noticed, not exactly a nice Christmas surprise.

Box is intact the ears are in a thick celophane bag so they must of been in there a while. sealed bag at that.

Oh well then, definitely must have happened at the manufacturer. Maybe as ClaireyS has suggested they also sell grain too.

Thank goodness your dog did not have any.

they must have started as eggs to have lasted that long.  I wonder if they are proper maggots from flies then :(

We buy pig ear strips from wilkinsons (not made by them though, made by the "air dried treats" people ;)). They come in sealed plastic packets and twice now I've opened them to find 2 or 3 black bugs (not squirmy like maggots) about 5mm in length, dead AND alive. I was so horrified both times that I washed them all down the kitchen plug hole  but now regret not keeping them to send to the manufacturer. If it happens again I definitely will. Ugh.
