My pup managed a 1st place in his first show and the judge was very complimentary about him but I was disappointed that only his name appeared listed in the show report :( I would've liked to see her comments in her critique!

Is there any problem with writing to the judge and asking for her comments? (assuming I can find an address to write to!)

That's strange for a first place

At Open shows first placed dogs are usually given a critique in the dog press. At Championship shows first and second placed dogs usually have them.

Did any dog judged by this judge get a critique?

She did a critique for BIS and the breed she judged but I got a 1st in an AV class and wonder if that's why the places were just listed. Whatever the reason, it was quite disappointing :(

Hi Malakai,

As a general rule, when judging BIS and the variety classes, you do a write up on your BIS, RBIS, BPIS and RBPIS plus any breeds you do.  As for variety classes, when a winning dog has been entered in another class under another judge (breed or AVNSC) you don't do a critique.  If the dog is only entered under you then you do write a critique.
So if your puppy was only entered under that judge in the AV classes then yes it should have had a write up.  If it was in another breed or AVNSC class then you'll only get the critique from that judge.  Confused yet? LOL

Okey dokey... it's a shame cos he got chucked in the breed class LOL. I just thought that as she bothered to take notes, I might get to see what she thought.
Of course as he's my baby, it should read "perfection" :D It's my biased opinion and I'm sticking to it ;)

My Critique - "Lovely grey and white furry boy, big smile and lots of wagging"!

I'm missing 2 lately - I've been pretty lucky over all, but I am still very sad that the Beckenham judge never did one as I never expected my girl to win there and I would have loved to read why he placed her BOB over some of the gorgeous dogs there. I asked the KC and apparently the rules are only that they have to do one for Champ shows and breed club open shows, not general open shows. :-(

Surely the dog should get a critique regardless of if it were judged by another judge, always have had more than one crit if entered under more judges at open shows with a good selection of variety classes.

I think some breeds are far more likely to get a critique than others whenever I,m searching for any of ours there always seem to be lots of terriers and hound getting write ups.
I was really dissapointed this ywar when my girl had three BOBs and not one write up granted they were only open shows but those wins mewant a lot to me and my dog means an awful lot more:mad:
Why do they get you to pose the dog and stand there in the boiling sun while they scribble in a book if they are not going to bother publishing a critique.

Hi
Ignorant question here from someone who works but has never shown in her life........you say in your post 'when you are searching for any of ours.....'  that just got me wondering if the critiques are available in the public domain anywhere?  Just that I would be interested in looking up a couple of dogs in my guys ancestry and also (in years to come) it may help with the selection of a stud for my bitch (IF we ever get that far!)

Cheers

They are generally printed in one of the weekly dog papers, Dog World or Our Dogs, so you'd have to find someone who keeps their back copies. :-)

Or if yu get an online subscripton to Our dogs they archive them for several years.

I think that would be fair Brainless - after all, if we were only interested in one judge's opinion, we'd never bother to go to more shows after our first Firsts! That Beckenham one where I'm missing the breed critique she also won a variety class and the judge said he'd been told not to bother doing a critique if they'd been placed in breed, so I don't get anything. Ah well!

How would a judge doing varieties know if a dog had been placed highly enough in breed competition to get a critique? Surely they shouldn't. Writing a critique is a chore, but then so is getting up in the early hours to drive to judge, to me its all part of the 'deal'. Breed clubs have the answer - dont include offenders on B lists - that would mean less judging for them. So anyone upset write to your breed club and complain.

In my case the variety judge asked me. Last time we didn't get a critique I phoned the club secretary and they didn't seem to care that the judge hadn't submitted one, is this unusual or is it not worth informing the 2 secretaries of my current 2 missing critiques? Not sure I still have the East Kent schedule anyway. Think I'll just have to be satisfied with the rosettes! :-)

In the case of an open show, the judge isn't necessarily on your Club's judging list anyway and especially when they are judging AV classes, so complaining about a lack of critique wouldn't help.
