Can anybody help me? In '05/'06 I did self employed work for some of the year. This tax year so far I have only done PAYE work so been paying tax at source.  I have just got my tax bill - which I was expecting - but they are charging me tax for this tax year too on the basis of what I earnt last year. If I phone them and explain that I have been PAYE this year will they let me just pay last year's tax, or will they make me pay tax for this tax year too and then I'll have to wait for them to refund it? Thanks.

The best thing is to contact them to ask.  I have always found them very helpful, either by phone or a visit to the tax office.

You can ask not to pay it. You will have to explain that you do not intend to do any self-employed work  and won't have any extra tax to pay. If, however, you do owe some extra tax at the end of the year because you do do some self-employed work, then they may charge you interest on it :(

Have you had a tax bill because they usually enclose a form to reduce the advance tax.

When you are self employed you pay for the current year and half the following year.  It is called payment on account (on account of what you might earn I guess).  You can elect to reduce or not pay this amount if you are not doing any self employed work.

When you say you have just got your bill, do you mean a tax demand or a code change notification?

phone them is the best bet - whatever advice you get here will not alter the response they give you
