I have learned something I will never do again.
I didn't have my bitch spayed. We didn't want to put her through having the operation.
How daft we have been.
A week last Sunday we took her to the vets. She had been off her food for three days and drinking more than normal.
They scanned her and the dreaded word Pyometra.
Emergency operation right away.
She has had the stitches out today and all is well.
The one problem we have had she wouldn't eat.
We have had to put the food in her mouth.Slowly she is eating by herself.
I will never have a bitch again and not have her spayed.
We could have lost her.

Don't beat yourself up over it.  You were only doing what you thought was best by not putting her through the operation.  As an owner of a bitch I decided to get my dog spayed but agonised and worried over the operation because of the anaesthetic, the aftercare, what if something goes wrong etc.  I can well understand why you didn't get your bitch spayed.

Main thing is that the Pyometra was caught in time and your dog is on the road to recovery :)

I agree with Cheryl, life is full of risks, some we choose to take, and others we don't. We assess what we are prepared to accept and make our choices. You've had a shock and you can't quite believe what you've gone through, but like Cheryl says, the important thing is it's turned out OK. :cool:Keeping dogs is one shock after another, they do put you through the mill somethimes.

Chin up, :)

Glad that your bitch is OK.

She had been off her food for three days and drinking more than normal.

These are classic symptoms so hopefully by posting here you have helped to educate others. :)  I would recommend that any bitch drinking more then normal should be taken to the Vet immediately.  Pyometra is not common but can certainly be a matter of life and death.

Thank you for your replies.

I do hope other people reading this will learn from my mistake.

She used to like being in season as she got to eat my males dinner.
He was more interested in her.
One good thing to come out of this.It will be better for my male.
I wont be needing my baby gates any more.

I did think about mating them once.
Then thought more about it and decided against it.
My male is a good specimen of the breed.

Given the situation, I think it'll all turn out for the best.  A happier home life for everyone. ;) :)

Spaying is a risk and not spaying is a risk.  Pyometra is not inevitable.  Therefore you did not make a "mistake" you made a decision which you thought correct at the time.

So sorry. :( What happened? The original post said she came through the op okay and she'd now had the stitches out? What went wrong?
- By dog [gb] Date 15.12.06 23:12 UTC
Thank you everyone.
She was doing great.
My partner took her for a walk.
He came back and had taken Khan for his walk.
She just yelped and lied down.I was stroking her and loving her and she just died.
The vet doesn't think it was anything to do with the operation.
They said it was to quick.

We have told them we want her to go to Liverpool to find out what she has died from.
Help me are we doing the right thing.

Goodness, what a shock.  I'm so sorry.

Normally I rarely think that post mortems serve any useful purpose, but in this case, I too would need to know that it wasn't anything to do with the operation. :(
- By marguerite [gb] Date 16.12.06 10:51 UTC
(((((hugs to you all)))))) Hopefully the PM will tell you what went wrong.  I have only ever had 1 of my bitches spayed the rest are all intact and "touch wood" not had any problems with them at all.

What terribly sad and shocking news.

Please please don't blame yourself.  You have done nothing wrong please remember that. There's no right or wrong it's just sometimes we are just stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to making decisions.

Oh, this is awful news, I'm so sorry. Thinking of you.

So sorry for your loss.  Thinking about you at this difficult time.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 16.12.06 18:15 UTC
Ahhh I'm so sorry to hear this maybe it was something more than pyometra and I hope that you vet does get it checked out.

I must admit that I don't spay my bitches and have Pomeranian's at 16 years of age and my eldest Spanish is 13.

Don't blame yourself for anything it is not your fault.  Just try and remember all those great times you had with her.

Think only of the good things.Cyber-hugs to you.

That's so dreadfully sad. :( I'd definitely want to find out what happened if it was my dog, for peace of mind.
- By Carrington Date 17.12.06 19:19 UTC
Yes dog,

I think I would need to know what had happend to her, whether a blood clot or whatever else it could possibly be. I'm very sorry about what has happened, you must be devastated, the only blessing is she died in your arms and you were there for her to the end.

Let us know the outcome of this very sad story.

Run free Ling.

I am so sorry for your loss, my thoughts are with you.
- By dog [gb] Date 17.12.06 21:17 UTC
Thank you everyone.
Could the blood clot have been caused by the operation ?
Just opinions please.
We are devastated.
I am worried sick about how my boy will cope without her.
- By Carrington Date 18.12.06 07:59 UTC
I don't think anyone would really be able to say dog there are so many if's and but's, but coincidentally thinking IMO for a healthy dog to yelp, collapse and then die a couple of weeks after an operation I would be thinking there may be a conection she was only 6 wasn't she?  Wait for the autopsy as anything any of us say is purely guess work and may be completely wrong, but it is a strange coincidence.

As for your boy, give him plenty of extra time and cuddles and try to focus on him yourself, it is devastating news perhaps in time you may get him another friend but for now give yourself time.
- By grommet [gb] Date 18.12.06 13:43 UTC
Really sorry to read about this.
I hope the autopsy can provide some answers.
- By scarlettwynter [gb] Date 18.12.06 20:05 UTC
I am so very sorry to read this. My thoughts are with you.
- By dog [gb] Date 19.12.06 11:53 UTC
Thank you everyone.
My OH didn't want the post mortem.
He said no matter what we can't bring her back.
We have decided not to go ahead with it.
She is now at peace.
Ling we will always miss and love you.

I'm so very sorry to hear about your girl :-( I had a German Shepherd dog that I had castrated and 3 weeks after the operation he was ill and didn't want to walk about and was very lethargic and off his food.  We took him to the vets who didn't really give him a good examination at all and just said his tummy felt tender and he might be 'brewing' for some diarrhoea.  He had a high temperature and I was not happy.  The next day he was even worse and his scrotum was really swollen.  I phoned the vet and it was the vet whose practice it was and he said to bring him down straight away (he asked why we hadn't brought him before and I said we did but saw his partner.) We took him in and he found a blood clot in his scrotum.  He had to go back for injections for the next 5 or 6 days and had lots of tablets - fortunately he recovered well.
