Hi,

We have now had Boris for 1 year and we are interested in showing him, as well as getting him a serious lady friend. Being new dog owners we need some advice. We bought Boris as a pedigree pup and now everyone keeps telling us how lovely he has become. Can someone help us?

Many thanks

Nina and Steven

If Boris's breeder is an experienced exhibitor/breeder then my first advise would be to take some good pictures. that means stand him square looking staraight ahead and take one of his profile at his height (photographer should crouch, or have a good zoom lense), also take one of his head, front and back. Send these to the breeder with detaiols of his height (measured at top of shoulders to ground) and weight!

They should be able to say if he shows any promise at all. If they live a reasonable distance then take him down to see them. If they are not experienced, but the owner of the sire is, then contact the sires owner.

If both the breeder and sires owner have no real experience of showing it may be that Boris has been bred from parents whose quality re breed standard is unknown to either. If the Grenparents were good dogs though, you may just be lucky and have a show qualuty specimin.

If he is not of showable quality love him for who he is. Join your neares Samoyed club, find a ring training class to learn how to show Boris (yopu can have fun with him at the lowesr levels of showing) and this will start your education in the niceties of the breed. With this experience and knowledge gained in a year or two you will hopefully have enough knowledge to buy a second pup from a breeder whose stock you admire. If you attend shows run by Samoyed clubs or championship shows with classes, then you will over this time get an idea of what to look for.
