Wanted to pick your brains folks - is there any point in maintaining comprehensive car insurance if your car is virtually worthless or is third party sufficient/a good idea? Also why do you have to state a car value when applying for insurance when they always put 'market value' on the policy?

My car is so ancient (11 years) that it isn't possible to find a value online! :D
Anyone want to recommend their car insurer?

Don't know about the dropping comp cover Annie but if reducing to third party at least include fire and theft too!
I'm with esure.com - I saved a substantial amount with them when I changed vehicles. I've been with Churchill and Diamond too and had reasonable quotes.
Fortunately (excuse me as I dash off to find a piece of wood :D ) ........................
ok, back now! I've never had a claim so can't comment on how good any would be in that event.
regards, Teri :)
Thanks Teri :).

Oh so true, that's when you find out just how reliable they are!

I would get two quote for fully comp and just third party to see what the difference is and then decide if it is worth paying the extra. Also check if it affects your no claims bonus as well :)
I use Tesco's ( they were the only people that would insure me  ) and so far they have been excellent

I have a £500 excess .We had somebody go into the back of us a couple of weeks ago. I informed them and got a letter with all the details of where I was to send the car ( it will be picked up and a car delivered for me to use ) and also that they had waived the excess as they were confident the fault was entirely the other drivers

I think it may have helped as he was insured with them as well :)
Thanks Lucy :).

Wasn't Ashley's dad from Emmerdale was it, trying to get his own back??? :D :D

Mmmm it may have been his Grandson :D

Tesco's
seem to be pretty good. We had someone go into the back of my car (the Boy was using it as a named driver) a couple of weeks ago and we're trying to sort getting it mended. We don't know yet whether to come to an arrangement with the other guy (who admits liability
and we have an independent witness) in case the insurance tries to write it off, seeing as the car's knocking on a bit. But they wouldn't give us enough to buy another with so we don't want to go down that route, and are keeping the car firmly in our possession!

Annie, I would say if the cost of insuring the car fully comprehensively is more than the value of the car, then it's not worth it.
Have you tried
http://www.confused.com for a quote?
Well that was what I wondered Earl. I don't know exactly how much the car is worth, probably no more than a few hundred at most. My current insurance renewal is around £153 (plus 8% extra for monthly payment). I've always had comprehensive insurance but am now wondering if it is worth it with such a low value car as it would undoubtedly get written off anyway, even with a fairly low key accident.
Haven't tried confused.com yet but may well do so, thanks. :)

I had my car insured with Norwich union through an insurance broker. I then used confused.com and saved myself £500 and guess which insurance company that was through??!!!! Norwich union direct lol!!!!!!

Shows the big price difference that there can be between going direct and using a broker!! Have always used confused.com ever since and they always find me the cheapest prices. Think you get a discount going through them as well??

Paula.
I went through something similar with my first mortgage. The building society turned me down but the mortgage broker said don't be surprised if I arrange your mortgage through them!

Will certainly try confused.com - did have a look yesterday but there seemed to be pages and pages to fill in - still I suppose better to do it once than many times over. :) Still got the problem about what value I put down for the car though as I really have no idea. :(
Well, got a nice long list to go through with confused.com so that was handy. Surprised to find that Tesco was very expensive, even the value one!

Didn't find that esure was cheap either.

I've always found Tesco quite expensive for me aswell!! Glad you managed the form!! At least once it's done it's done.

Yes, the fabulous thing about confused.com is that you can go back every year, all you have to do is increase your no claims bonus and submit it again for a whole pile of new quotes - easy peasey :)

Have you tried
Money supermarket to compare quotes too? I'm with More Than and I have to say that the only time I've had to claim - when someone threw a stone at my back window & the glass smashed - they were terrific. And if you pay monthly they don't charge a huge amount more for the privilege!
Thanks Christine, I've now tried them as well and got another long list! Strangely, they have some of the companies confused.com had but with different quotes!

Seems I have some homework to do - now I know why I haven't changed insurer for the last 20 years!! :D Bad enough trying to cope with Christmas preparations without adding car insurance!
By far the cheapest seems to be Budget - anyone had any dealings with them?

I have found fr the last 2 years that Tesco insurance is the cheapest for me :D
And I cant fault them for claims.
Long and complicated story but briefly my car was reversed into while it was parked outside my house with me sitting at my computer ON HERE on 4th May It took 6 until end Sept for the other party to accept liability, but cant fault Tescos enough, they were brilliant, but they were not impressed with AXA as they couldnt get hold of them. They must have sent 10+ letters. It is still going on as well as they havnt recouped costs but my car is sorted and would have been they week after if it hadnt been I wanted to wait for them to accept liability so I didnt have to pay the £100 excess.
Lea :)
Like all insurances, I suppose it depends on individual circumstances as to which company provides the best deal. At my age and with a clean driving record, I thought I was a good risk - judging from their quotes, most companies seem to agree but Tesco obviously thinks otherwise! :D

Strange as I have one conviction and a high risk car but Tescos insured me

:D
Aha, puzzle solved - they obviously like high risk, just to be different from the rest! :D

I think they may have seen the amount of wine we buy on line from them so thought we were good customers :D :D

Even more high risk then :D :D

They obviously like to live dangerously with their clients :D :D :D ;) I'd be too tame for them :D

Um not high risk, as I passed my test 7 years ago, been insured for 6 years in my own right and only claim I have had is this year and its a no fault claim. And that is over a year after I started with Tescos. Oh and I am nearly 30 and have no points (How I have managed that I have NO idea!!!!They have obviously heard of my reputation!!!!)
Lea :)
Only joking Lea :).
Still waiting to hear from anyone who has insured with Budget?

Only thing that I know about Budget is that, about 6 years ago, we were trying to get third party insurance on an old Peugeot 106 for my 17 year old son. Budget quoted us £3500

AND had the cheek to send the quote in the post too !! Did they actually think that we were daft enough to accept it ??? :D :D :D Certainly not 'budget' insurance :D

All companies have different views on areas, make and age of car, also non-factory fitted extras (fancy alloys, souped up engines, body kits, expensive sound systems for eg can all contribute to a car being more stealable) and then of course on individual drivers etc. Even older cars in some locations are viewed to be a high risk because they are easy for joy riders to steal - so naturally insurance co's that have had to pay out in those instances will give them a wider berth in future.
If you get an outrageous quote it usually means that company just don't want a driver with that particular make/model in a particular geographic location ;) Hence the need to shop around
Good luck! Teri :)

My own insurance company refused to quote for my son - that was fine, I understood. Why Budget couldn't have said the same, I don't know  :D
Daisy
try sheilla's wheels, i saved nearly £100, and my hubby is down as named driver!!.
i tried loads of quotes and they always came up the cheapest
debs
They are included in my list of insurers from confused.com but not at the cheaper end, although they are still around £30 less a year than my renewal quote. :)

I will always go fully comp now. Had to claim for a rear windscreen a couple of years back and i had fully comp. It was the first year i went fully comp as my previous cars were rust buckets so this one was like a luxary car. Anyway £50 and new glass fitted but i asked how much if i hadn't of been and they said £300 just for the glass then to fit it as well. So it was well worth the extra £80 in preimum that year and the other benifits can be good when needed.
Wow, that is certainly worth taking into account - thanks! :)

have you tried quinn direct. they are pretty no-frills but very cheap.
Quinn Direct were on the list I got from confused.com but not at the cheaper end.
At the moment, I'm thinking of using yesinsurance.co.uk who specialise in older, low use cars. Really glad I tried confused.com, been very useful. :)
