Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / When is a fish a deer?
- By Harley Date 07.12.06 17:46 UTC
As a raw feeder I don't know the ins and outs of the ingredients in complete food but was recently given a very small sample bag of Burns venison and brown rice complete which I was going to use as training treats. It's a pocket sized bag with about 40 bits of kibble in it.

I have just looked at the ingredients listed which are as follows : Brown rice (min 50%), Fish (min 27%), Oats, Peas, Sunflower Oil, Seaweed, minerals and vitamins.

In view of the fact that it is called venison and brown rice I would have thought it would contain venison  The packet says the food was developed by a veterinary surgeon so I am wondering how the vet managed to qualify if he/she is unable to tell the difference between a fish and a deer

Does anyone feed this to their dogs, and if so, would you be have a quick look at the ingredients on the packet and see if yours says the same. :)

Think it must be a packaging error Harley as I've just had a quick look at their website and they say it contains min 27% venison. :D

Do you know if they do a fish variety ? This sample is in a purple bag :)

I also thought it was pretty funny that it has a logo that says "not tested on animals" - made me doubt the vet's competence even more :D

They do have a fish variety but it looks from the website that the venison is in the purple bag. :)  Here's the website for info http://www.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk/dog_food.htm

the venison is in purple bag, fish is a diff colour.

bound to be printing error- i know the place the deer is farmed/kept..:)

So any idea why it says not tested on animals - I would have thought that would have been a must for dog food

A printing error might be the reason the bags were being given away as samples as my pack definitely has no mention of venison in the ingredients.

Lots of people think "tested on animals" means they're force-fed then slaughtered, etc. With pet foods, of course, it means that animals eat it and their health is monitored, but it's saves all the extremists getting aerated if they simply say that it's not tested on animals.

Is the food you eat tested on animals?

Burns regularly send out samples, I get a lot of bags of different varieties from my supplier and use them as treats and give them to people who want to try it before buying  :)

If you're worried about the mis-print, why not contact them via the website and ask them about it?  They are very good at replying to questions promptly ;)

No not worried about it in the slightest - just thought it was funny :D

The not tested on animals slogan comes from the British union against vivisection (BUAV) Campaign to stop trials on animals except for taste trials. Only about 7 companies qualified for the award and they in the main were independent companies who could prove a clean policy of non invasive testing. Full details can be found at www.buav.com

Only 7? Thats sad :(

Companies could mention something about successfull "feeding trials" or something like that on their packaging. Some companies have their employee's test the food on their own dogs in their own homes,no need to have caged dogs in testing facilities then :)
