Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Pup won't eat very much

Hi

I am posting on behalf of a friend .

He has just got a new dog - brought him home on Tuesday evening.
He is eight weeks old - he had has his first jab this week and has been wormed - he says the pup poo'd out worms the same evening .

But the pup won't really eat anything - just a small bit at lunch time and then nothing.....

The pup is fairly lively .

Should he be worried

Oh yes - he is feeding him Beta puppy .

Since the puppy passed woms it would suggest that it's not been very well cared for before your friend took it on :(  As far as I know, most modern wormers show no evidence of actual worms so I'm guessing this little mite was infested :(

Perhaps he's not used to being fed much either which, coupled with a heavy worm burden, will possibly mean his tummy can't take much as yet.

I'd leave off the Beta puppy for now and feed steamed white fish for a couple of days and then boiled chicken for a further couple of days.  This will be gentler on the system.  If the puppy shows no sign of improving in the next 48 hours at most, I'd return to the vets as they can go downhill so quickly.

Was it your friend's own vet that give the pup it's vacs or was the puppy done before being bought by him?   It may be that this puppy will need to be more closely observed than most - even if apparently lively just now.  To not want to eat is abnormal - even allowing for strange surroundings and trauma of leaving litter mates / dam etc

Hope this helps.  Teri

I would agree with Teri on the worm side of things.
If the pup will not try the fish then a trick I sometimes use is to boil some chicken breast and some rice and just chop it down in the blender till you can form it into little balls and hand feed a little at a time. This usually gets them going pretty quick. They like the closenes and it is a bit like having some competition from the other pups was.
Hope this helps

Hi I have passed the info on - the puppy is starting to eat now - after being being given the fish - I think he's changed the food also to JWB .
