Get a bike.

Get a bike.

How practical is that for most people as a means of transport to work ? The minority I should think :)
- By labmad [gb] Date 08.12.06 17:19 UTC
a Bike.....That would take me now 2 hours each way to get to work which leaves me with 1 hour at home with my dog at night! Some things just are not possible I'm afraid.
- By Isabel Date 08.12.06 17:23 UTC
I think there may be more people able to cycle than do.  Hubbie cycles to work but it is only a 14 mile round trip and the bonus is Lucy, he's got the body of a 19 year old ;)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.12.06 17:27 UTC
Won't the 19 year old be wanting it back? Or is he going to have to bury it under your patio? :D
- By Isabel Date 08.12.06 17:29 UTC
:D :p
- By LJS Date 08.12.06 17:29 UTC
Wow lucky you :D :D

In Oxford for example, there are bucket loads of cyclists but there is still a major problem with traffic queues

I can't imagine anybody trying to cycle into say the middle of Birmingham  It is mad enough in a car

How long would it take to cycle 70 miles? That's the distance my husband used to have to travel to work. And no, there is no method of public transport, other than a taxi (ooh, a car!) that would get him there and back the same day, even if he didn't do a 12-hour shift whilst there. And no, journeys of that distance aren't unusual.

Sorry but this is making me laugh now :-D

At the end of the day people can say, get on a bus or get a bike and cycle for a couple of hours to get into work but the fact is it aint never gonna happen.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.12.06 16:45 UTC
Make public transport free, clean, punctual and safe.
- By Isabel Date 08.12.06 16:58 UTC
Actually I don't see why transport should be free, our cars aren't, reasonable seems more reasonable to me :)  Punctual, well, reports are divided on this and as, I understand it, public transport is safe compared to private car travel.

But if you genuinely want people to give up clean, safe and punctual transport, you've got to make the incentive really good. From the CCTV I've seen on Crimewatch, public transport is terribly dangerous. Muggings, stabbings, robbery ...
- By JaneG [gb] Date 08.12.06 17:18 UTC
I don't think it's really that dangerous JG, it's just that the incidents that occur are captured on CCTV, more people do I'm sure get attacked on the streets but it's not filmed. In 5 years of driving night buses I've never seen an innocent person get attacked. I've had fights on my bus, usually young lads - there is a lot of shouting insults back and forwards first...if one group kept quiet it would never lead to a fight. I'm not aware of a single case of mugging, stabbing or robbery on any of our buses - and we run just under 1000 buses, providing a 24hr service.

There's been a report in the news just this week of a woman followed home from the bus stop and murdered. :( And I've never had a fight in my car!
- By JaneG [gb] Date 08.12.06 17:24 UTC
ahah...murdered on the street - the bus was safe!!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.12.06 17:25 UTC
The bus was apparently where she was selected.
- By Isabel Date 08.12.06 17:28 UTC
People get attached all over the place, people get attacked for their cars.
- By JaneG [gb] Date 08.12.06 17:28 UTC
The same person could just have easily have seen someone getting out their car and decided to murder them. You can't use odd incidents like that to say public transport isn't safe. New buses have several continuously recording cameras on them and audio recording - much safer than your car :)

Closing this as it is getting very long
