Hi

When, following a tummy upset, you starve a dog for 24 hours, when does this 24 hours start? Sorry, probably a very silly question  but is it from their last feed or from their last vomit/poo?

Thanks
Caroline

I've always done it from the last time they ate

I starve for 24hrs from the last time they were sick. Sorry if that muddies the waters :)

Thanks Munrogirl, no it doesnt muddy the waters :) . Thinking about it if he had been sick 2 hours before his food time tonight, I wouldnt have fed him at very least until the morning, probably later, so your post makes perfect sense. I was thinking more about the fact that he had the runs last at 2am this morning and hadnt eaten since 5pm last night and I was a bit worried about him going right round to tomorrow morning without food, especially as everything he had eaten from that meal had gone straight through him. He has has a spoonful of rice and a little chicken which seems to have supressed the hunger without any ill effects! In fact, I think im being played ;) (she says as he lays on the floor throwing his toy up in the air and catching it!)

Appreciate your reply x

My vet always suggests starving only if being sick but if only having the runs then feed a light diet.
Seems to work for us.

If it's just the runs I tend to miss out the next meal, but put a yoghurt in with the following one. It usually works :D If sick I look to see why. If it is just some grass, or just a little, I play it by ear, so to speak. If the dog looks fine at the next feedtime then I give a light meal and wait to see what happens. If really sick then I visit the vet at the earliest time I can and get their opinion ;)

Try him with a hard boiled egg or some mashed potato with no butter - that seems to help when Jasper gets the runs!

I'd say the same as Lindylou, I only starve if they're being sick (which is why there's no mention of poo in my last post :D ) unless they're absolutely pouring diarrhoea (which fortunately mine never have). If they're loose I just feed small light meals, if sick I starve 24hrs then feed small light meals :)

My 'light' meals consist of plain mashed potato (nothing added) or plain boiled rice and plain boiled coley. The dogs love it - I swear they're ill on purpose sometimes :) And as Lindylou said, natural live yoghurt is good for putting in 'good' gut bugs.

Thanks all. There was a little sick but the poo was quite severe - there was blood in it. Its not as serious as it sounds since Sox has quite a sensitive tum and when he has had the runs a few times there is sometimes blood where he has strained etc. Although the blood is not caused by something serious its obviously important to nip it in the bud so I was happy to starve him for a while but this had to be balanced because when he hasnt eaten for a while he throws up bile  I would normally agree with the suggestion about only starving when hes been sick though :) Also thanks for the suggestions about the potatoes and eggs, its really helpful.
