After saying I would never get my Lana girl speyed I decided after some sad phantom pregnancies and some pre menstrual moods that it was selfish of me not to have her done. After MUCH discussion and nerves I booked her in and she was speyed on Monday. It upset me but I kept telling myself it was for the best. She cried non stop when she came home (normal I guess) then last night her wound starting weeping then literally dripping bloodstained fluid. We met the vet at the surgery last night and she gave Lana some painkillers and told us she will be ok and to keep an eye on her at home....This morning she is still dripping and we are going back to the vets. I feel truly awful, sick even. I put my poor girl through this and I am gutted.........
Sarah :-(

Don't beat yourself up about it, in the domestic dog phantom pregnancies often lead to pyrometra(in my experience that is)which might mean an emergency spay when your bitch is ill(this happened to one of mine)which is far more dangerous than spaying a healthy bitch
She will recover quite quickly & be back to normal soon
Cyber {{{{{hugs}}}}}to you both & healing thoughts on their way
Sarah dont beat yourself up about it. You did what you thought was right for your girl and in time I am sure you will see the benefits. You couldn't foresee any complications its just we all hate to see our pets suffering. (((((HUGS))) to you and your girl :)

Don't feel guilty. You did what you thought was the best for your girl. She'll be fine. Gentle cuddles to her and I hope she's better soon.

Thanks Lori, we have been back to the vet today and she now has a dressing on her wound and has been given some Valium, so she seems pretty settled right now. I think my presence is actually making her cry more so I am trying to ignore her a bit (which I know sounds awful) - but I am seeing a pattern, especially when her dad comes home ;-)

Don't worry too much Afghans are good at pulling at your heart strings. When Jenna was speyed she "couldn't" move for a week it was as though she thought she would fall apart. Funnily enough as soon as the stitches came out she was off like a loon but five minutes before was a very delicate flower

So true Sue, So true! :) Funnily enough Lana cant move either - she doesn't quite have the energy to reach her water bowl, but if need be she will bark at the post man ;)
Thanks for the replys, I know I did the right thing. Moonmaiden put it into perspective - it could be much worse!

Sarah :D

sarah I know how you feel, I howled over our bernese when she was done just felt so sorry for her she seemed so pathetic even though she had no problems at all. Made me put off getting our setter done, but finally did the deed a few weeks ago - different dog, vet said 'try not to let her jump' some hope - she was trying to jump in the back of the car two hours after the op :-( .
Came to the conclusion that Bramble is just one big soppy lump who will do anything for a hug!! :D

Been back to the vet today, and they dont seem happy with the build up of fluid behind her wound. They want to check her in the morning and maybe re admit to drain it :( They believe that she has pulled some internal stitches causing fluid to leak from the layer between muscle and skin. I really hope they dont have to do this.
The bill stands at £320.00 so far for a 'routine' spey. I know money is not an issue when it comes to my girl but ...WHY US! When I got in the car to take her I noticed a huge crack along the car windscreen....I'm not a bad person....
Sarah (feeling quite sorry for herself by now)
I was also offended by a comment that I "must have let her get at it" from the vet, I certainly did not and I protested my innocence. I'm not taking my eyes of her for the rest of the day - As long as she is no worse they cant re admit her - I Hope.
Sarah
Take no notice of the vets comment about letting her get at it. I think they do say things without thinking sometimes because they are so focussed on the animal and because they see these things all the time. Im sure you have wrapped her in cotton wool and have spoiled her rotten, so dont worry about it. Just concentrate on getting her better and dont forget to take care of yourself by getting that windscreen fixed, especially in this cold weather. We dont want you getting hurt now, do we?!
Im sure she will be on the up soon.
Take care x
i agree with yo u entirerly money isnt the issue when it comes to your dog,but is she a big breed as my vets cost goes on the weight my bitch was 20.05 k and the cost was £130 including a hernia done which i had,nt requested but was glad it was done. But she was really down for 2 days but the wound was very clean and healed up great .Hope she,s soon back on her feet...

Dont worry about the vets comments.
Gemma had an emergancy spay 5 days before I moved house. And I moved with the works van so I was doing alot of the moving.
She started weeping and bloody liquid was seeping out of her on the living room floor.
When I took her in the sat morning for a check up and the rang The vet that night as it was getting worse she said I should keep her more quiet. Only problem was it was so hot I copuldnt leave her in the car, and there was no where I could trap her in. She was pacing up and down all day.
Made sure she was caolmer o the sunday and it sorted it. Told another vet on the tuesday at another check up and she agreed there was nothing I could do to keep her calmer than I did. And once settled down she was non the worse for wear!!!!
Got to go through it all again in a few months with my new one!!!! Hopefully will be calmer next time!!!!
Lea :)
>I was also offended by a comment that I "must have let her get at it" from the vet, I certainly did not and I protested my innocence
That's what I was told about one of my beardies after a similar thing happened :(
However it turned out to be that she was allergic to the stitches used(dissolvable)& the reaction disappeared when the stitches had dissolved

She seems alot more settled this afternoon :) I really hope they dont have to drain it. She seems fine in herself - ate a piggy trotter earlier, tried to steal Ralphs! Going to the toilet as normal, no temperature.
I have had a week off work last week, so gonna need to explain to my boss in the morning that I wont be back yet...To be honest with my cracked windscreen the way it is I probably wouldn't have been able to go anyway
...What ever happened to the personal touch you used to get from vets (changing the subject!) I have seen a different one every time (5 in the last week) and the support staff talk to you like you are stupid! Its a state of the art hospital complete with plasma tv in reception but I would sooner have a more personal touch, thats for sure.
Anyway 9.40am appointment tomorrow where they will decide to leave her or keep her in...Keep you informed - and thank you all for your kind thoughts
Sarah :)

One of the vets tried to tell me that I had obviously let her run around & jump about as usual, whereas in fact she had ben crated & taken out into the garden on her lead on her own ! My expression & heavy sigh said it all & he did apologise without me saying anything !
Paws crossed for your girl

The vet has kept her in this morning :-( Going to re operate as they suspect a hernia....My poor girlie :-(

Oh Sarah I am sorry to hear this but she is going to be ok :)
The vets is out of order with his comments. More like bad stitching if you ask me as unless she had been running round like a loony then there should not have been a problem ;)
Take care and try not to worry she will be back with you very soon :)

Well, I have just had a call from the vet (its been a long day) and Lana is awake...Phew!! It was a hernia causing the problem but has now been rectified. She is coming home with some Morphine so should be fairly settled on that for a while! I have washed all her bedding and have made it very comfy for her return home. Heres hoping she recovers in a trouble free, speedy fashion. It will be good to have her home :)

Glad to hear she's okay!!!

Big gentle cavalier kisses from JD & so glad she's on the mend
Give her a big hug from Delilah and Zorro, who have been very concerned ....now are you sure you havent been letting her swim in any ponds, cos that may have given her a hernia :)
By Rozzer
Date 05.12.06 08:36 UTC
:D - Cath we were only discussing that the other day. Once she is well she can jump in all the ponds she likes :D As long as its not at an affie race meet where she can embarass mum and dad :D
Bless her!

That's probably why the bill is £320  . Ours was £160 a fornight ago. But as long as she is fine I'm sure its worth it! Hope everything goes smoothly now

Exactly Marion! After yesterday we are on £420 - Like I said previously whatever she needs she will get regardless of cost, but I cant help but feel that they are blaming me for the set back. I have had a microscopic amount of sleep since last Monday and have made every effort to keep her very quiet...
Anyway, like you said as long as she is fine now :) She is settled but the morphine runs out after today - time will tell!
Sarah

Just read about Lana and hope she is 100% very soon.

Glad to hear she is a lot better now. Thats expensive for a spay. I'm thinking of getting my oldest bitch done as well.
