Does anyone know anything about nasal mites? Has anyones dog had them before?

Looks like one of my dogs picked them up at a recent agility show (they're spread by direct nose-to-nose contact) and has now kindly passed them on to my other dogs. I noticed Pippa sneezing more than normal last week. At first I thought nothing of it but when she was still sneezing more than normal a couple days later I took her to the vet. They thought perhaps she had a foreign body in her nose and booked her in to have it flushed out. However, then a couple of my other dogs started sneezing too Well, apparently its nasal mites.

We're booked to go back to the vets on Tuesday but what I want to find out is how long does it take to clear up? Obviously they cant go dog training (I do obedience, agility and ringcraft) or go to any shows until its cleared up.

It certainly looks like I've got some extra time on my hands, and some crazy dogs ;)

yup, I'm from the UK. Time-scale wise it looks like we picked them up at the Godmanchester DTC agility show.

Apparently nasal mites are quite common but rarely diagnosed. The symptoms are sneezing more than normal and a runny nose :S They're tiny little white coloured things less then 1mm accross - but you can sometimes see them on infected dogs noses.

If I only had one dog I may not have noticed but I've got 4 dogs of my own and we look after another 2 during the week and they're all sneezing more than normal.

thanks. I have googled it already but I've not found anywhere that specifically mentions how long it takes to treat etc.

I see this link says the treatment is ivermectin - but you can't give that to collies can you??

milbemycin oxime is another drug thats used to treat nasal mites.

Blimey that's interesting, how did they diagnose nasal mites and what treatment do you have? I've had a similar thing, after an agility show too   One of my collies started sneezing violently while running in the field, almost the exact same scenario as yours I took her to the vet and they thought she had a foreign object up her nose. A couple of days later however her daughter started sneezing too, and then one of the borzois, all 3 had runny noses. I went back to the vets who gave them antibiotics just in case, although we're assuming it's some sort of viral infection, like kennel cough. I've not been to agility classes for almost three weeks to avoid spreading it round but they're finally better now, haven't heard a sneeze for at least 5 days.

They take a swab and put it under the microscope, however, if you're lucky you can see them occasionally on the dogs noses - tiny little white things.

Pippas main problem was the sneezing caused her tonsils and trachea to become inflamed. It also caused her to reverse sneeze more than normal too (nothing actually to do with sneezing I know). Our vet gave her antiinflammatories and antibiotics initially but when the others started sneezing we started thinking about other possible causes.

We've got to go back on Tuesday to collect some anti-parasite medication - not sure which one hes putting her on yet.
