Our puppy is 6 months old on 1st January  and we thought the first Championship show he could enter was Manchester, but looking on fossedata I notice that Boston have a championship show on 6th January but there is no Gordon Setter class, only AVNSC Gundog - does a place in an AVNSC class count towards crufts qualification?

No it doesn't.  With Gordon setters it has to be the right class at a Ch show where CCs are on offer for the breed.
