Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / "Caked" breast, advice please.

Hi, my litter of 6 is 3 days old. Pups are fat and happy and mum seems fine and is eating/drinking well. I have noticed that one of her breasts has an area of hardness. Its not red or inflamed and she doesn't mind me touching it. I think it might be that a milk duct has got blocked ( happened to me when I had my 1st son). I have popped a warm flannel on and have encouraged the pups to feed from the affected side. Any advice? I don't want to risk mastitus. Thanks for any help.

That is exactly what I would do/have done.  As the pups feeding and the milk prodcuton settle it should eae, unless of course an infection develops.

I agree, just keep an eye on it, the teats can go hard and then soften up again, the good old hot flannel is the way to go for now.

Thanks, I'll keep going with the flannel. Its a back breast, near to the belly on the inside if that makes sense <g>. She has got loads of milk come in today so that must be why. I put the biggest boy on that side, so hopefully that will help.
