Hiya just wondered what thoughts people have on giving roast knuckle bones to gnaw, I've given these to my dogs before with no problems, I know rawhide chews can be a danger - can these bones be a danger at all? They never break bits of bone off but I would like reassurance or to know of any possible dangers?

Thanks, do I go to the butchers for them? It always amazes me that pet shops sell so many 'treats' that can be such a danger to our pets, just last week my sister (a new dog owner) bought some sort of bone from her local pet shop only to find within 20 minutes the bone was in several pieces on the floor - most bits were horribly sharp shards of bone

I can't get over all the rawhide a certain big pet store chain sells :(  All the rawhide and the roast bones :( At least they don't recommend them to dogs under six months, but not many people read a leaflet on dog chews :(

Most butchers will either give or sell you knuckle bones

Your local butcher may give you lamb or pork bones, i get the large knuckle bones form a place in Pershore that sell them frozen.  They advertise in the dog world paper.  01386 556328.  Albion Meats they also deliver, they do a selection of bones.  My girl loves the lamb bones.

Thanks Yvonne thats great, will give them a call. Even though my dogs are little fluffy toy breeds they truly believe they are hyenas when it comes to a nice bone! When I collected both my boys, they both came with a selection of rawhide chews in their puppy packs - which promptly went in the bin  :D

My wonderful butcher saves his beef bones for me.  I went in the other day and he pulled out the whole leg of a cow!  I just had the thigh bone trimmed into cavie sized pieces and one large knuckle bone (the knee bit, I guess??) and off we popped.  He only asked for £1 to go in the charity box, so cheaper than pet stores too!

You can ususally get all sorts but it is worth phoning coz sometimes, with all the boneless meat they sell now, they don't have any.  My butcher will get boned beef in especially for me if I want the marrow bone!  They freeze well to!

Obviously, these sorts of bones are just recreational, they wont eat them all because beef leg bones are too tough.

I wouldn't say that Jenny lol , my boy (large breed mind) does manage to eat all of any recreational bones (usually cow) it is sometimes a worry that I live with 2 animals that have no problems gnawing their way through a cow leg :-D

Mine are teeny tiny Cav's (Only about 6Kg in weight).  Some of the knuckes are twice the size of their whole head!

He he!  Try telling my GSPs that......and that includes the 13 week old pup! 

My goodness!  I could never imagine my babies actually getting through one!  It'd take them a solid week! :-)

My 15 week old german spitz puppy is currently munching away through a namb neck quite happily!

And from the pressure she put on my finger the other day when playing I'm not at all surprised she can munch quite happily thorough these things!
