Topic Dog Boards / Health / GSD moulting outer coat

Hi

I have a 12 year old GSD who has nearly moulted his under coat (but of course too late as he now gets the shivvers) But i have noticed that quite a lot of his top long coat is coming out too.  He eats fine (dry food)and drinks plenty of water.  I didn't notice last year the outer coat coming out just the fluffy stuff.

He is a cross long and short-haired GSD, the front looks long (like a lions mane) and the back is short-haired, also it looks very dull.

You can't have a cross between two coats, it's either one or the the other. :) I don't know anything about GSD coats but in Malinois (=similar coat and type of dog) the usual moult is the undercoat, but every now and then, perhaps every three moults or so, the harsh top coat comes out as well and in fact I can hand strip it away like on a terrier and that is perfectly normal. Not sure if it could be the same with GSDs.
