My puppies are all due to go to their new homes soon and I have said that i would get them microchipped but when i spoke to the vet about it she was appauled and said that she won't do it as she likes to do it when they are spayed adn not before.  Her reasons are that it is a big needle and the puppies bleed  but I had both my puppies chipped at their injections with no trouble and I was wondering If I was wrong and what i shuld do with the pups.  i want them to be chipped just in case they ever get lost.  Any ideas?  I am going to ring the RSPCA tomorrow when it opens also to see waht their reaction is.

well all I can say that if the puppies bleed then the vet is doing something very wrong.  I even have my kittens done at 12 weeks and they have really thin skin and have no problems at all.  You may be able to contact someone such as the dog warden who will come round and do them all for you - and probably alot cheaper than the vet.

i did my and other litters of puppies from 7  to 8 weeks go with no trouble.not one of them bleed.

if it done right and in the right place as well.plus with puppies and kitten you dont put the all of the length of the needle in you only go half way with the needle piont.

where do you live and what breed are the puppie

a bit to after to come to chip the pups from surrey
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.11.06 20:35 UTC
The vets I work for chip young pups with no problems. I've seen a chihuahua pup (not as big as an adult as yours are at 7 weeks! :D) chipped and it didn't bleed. One of my dogs was chipped as an adult (25kg) and bled. Some do, some don't - it depends where exactly the blood vessels are on the individual dog.

My vet offered for mine to be done at 12 weeks.  They don't have any issues with it.

My vet has a special offer on microchipping to encourage people to have their dogs chipped when they come in for their second puppy vaccination. Nips was done at 10 weeks and apart from a tiny yelp when the needle went in, was completely unbothered by the procedure.

Presumably, if the OP's vet only microchips when dogs are spayed or neutered, she also expects this to take place long before maturity or whether or not it's necessary.

my first boy i had done at 8 weeks (with his first vax) didn't even flinch! then my bitch the breeder done just before we left so we could see that it was the right puppy that had been chipped etc (collar taken off at the same time) so that was about 7.5 weeks  neither of mine really bled and neither of them made a fuss about it at all. maybe they aren't very confident with giving chips in your surgery
- By JuneH [in] Date 27.11.06 13:18 UTC
My vet said the same thing and when I queried this with the surgery they said it had been a misunderstanding! The MC was done at 12 weeks and the needle didnt seem that big (compared to what was said) he gave the usual short whimper that he would do for any injection and then that was that! I would get it done soon, then you will have some peace of mind that should your dog get lost/stolen it might be found again.

Whether the pups (or kittens) bleed or not depends entirely on whether you happen to accidentally hit the wrong spot or not. (And there's no way of telling.) Makes no difference at all if the animal is 6 weeks or 6 years old. I do all my pups and kittens roughly a week before they leave me so pups at about 6 weeks kittens usually at 12 or 13 weeks.

When I took the course I was told "most animals don't bleed, but you can be guaranteed that if it is a WHITE one, it will." :D

Mine were both done as puppies on the second injection.   We had no problems with them or our vets.

mine was done at 7 weeks, the day before i took her home. no problems then, but you can feel it just under her skin on some days

CHANGE your vet!
- By Blue Date 27.11.06 16:05 UTC
I have had every puppy I have bred or bough microchipped at 8 weeks or a couple of days before with only the odd one bleeding and only a spot. The younger they are the thinner their skin is, I think it is far easier young.

I like all of mine done before the step foot out my door.

Hi

My whippet pup was chipped along with her second injection. The vet prefered not to do it at the first as she was so small and has fine skin. She never said a word were as my 3 year old Jack Russell screamed the place down

What happens if these pups are not spayed do they not get chipped?

I will get them done no matter what, that particular vet may not want to do it so I will be asking for someone else and then if that is a problem will be changing vets, but they will be losing a lot of money.  I have 3 adult dogs, 3 cats, rabbits, guineapigs and a gecko.

ditto weima....get a new vet....I would!!!

Did you know that it is only the microchip that you own. It is no indication of ownership of dog etc. I read about this somewhere in a dogs today magazine some months ago. Also microchips do travel so be careful.
Would you want a foreign body in your dog moving about? Very painful if it ends up somewhere where the dog lies on it. Especially in the smooth coated breeds.

Very painful if it ends up somewhere where the dog lies on it. Especially in the smooth coated breeds.

We're only talking of something the size of a grain of rice though aren't we?  Can't be that uncomfortable even if the dog lies on it especially in view of the fact that my dogs often lie in what looks very uncomfortable positions to me, ie head propped up on a stone fireplace etc :)
- By jumbuck [gb] Date 28.11.06 13:04 UTC
Hm grains of rice differ and I am certain that these chips do. I know of a dog at the moment that has had the chip move down to the sternum area and it doesn't want to lay on that bit. Must be very uncomfortable as I know the dog used to lay on that place. The vet said leave it and wouldn't take it out to reposition it. If it were my dog I would have it removed and never put back. :-( It is clearly visible under the skin and quite long, at least half an inch, 1.27cm. in new measurement.

My last litter were all chipped before they went to their new homes at 8 weeks. Not one cried, or bled. I got a bitch from a friend at 8 weeks and took her to the vets to be chipped. No noise, no blood. Unfortunately she had to go back a year later as it had moved and was in her chest heading for her leg :( The vet was all for leaving it, but I was frightened that it might end up in a joint so the microchip company paid for it to be removed and a new one implanted. This is still there :) I think next time I will get someone in to do it. Not that I don't trust the vet ;) it's just a pain to take a litter of about 10 pups to the vet
- By Goldmali Date 28.11.06 14:17 UTC
Well the chips I use are exactly 1 cm.
- By Blue Date 29.11.06 09:53 UTC
Boy you must know all the unsuccessful cases of microchipping. I have microchipped around 50 dogs/puppies in my life and guess what all 100% OK.
- By Moonmaiden Date 29.11.06 10:09 UTC Edited 29.11.06 10:13 UTC
My Rjj's chip is now halfway down his rib cage & it's still moving & it was implanted in the correct place before anyone asks(he's only chipped for his pet passport)
