I wonder if anyone can offer me any advice?  My lhasa bitch has produced her first litter (5) a week ago.  They are doing fine and are fat, warm and glossy.  However, just from yesterday, one puppy, one of the biggest, has been almost continually crying.  She is warm and she feeds.  Any idea what is wrong?  I have the puppies in my bedroom with me and have reared three previous litters.  In my experience they usually only cry when they are fighting for a teat or looking for a warm spot or hungry or something.  I have never had this continual crying whilst the rest of the litter lay there looking fat and content.  This puppy is making the sort of noise that you would expect if you took it out of the basket and put it on its own in the middle of the floor.
I am really scared it could be the beginning of fading puppy syndrome or something awful.  Can anyone more experienced offer me any explanation/advice?

take it to vet just to have it check out could be wind or fs or kc 101 things so it be best to go to vet

I would take this little one to the vets too. Do you know if he/she is going to the toilet ok? would definately do a quick vet trip just to be on the safe side.

Take the pup to the vet, I have had this with one of mine, only it wasn't putting on any weight, at 2 wks old it only weighed, 9oz, I was at the vet on the Monday, Wed and Fri and he gave pup an injection each visit to see if it would help.  Pup is now 3 wks old and weighs 12 oz, which is still very small, but at last I can see a fat belly and he is getting "rounder" instead of the skinny little thing he was, the other pups in the litter now weigh over 2lbs each.

Its really quite funny to watch him with the rest of the litter he is the most agile runs away, and just pushes himself inbetween the rest while they are lying sleeping.

I have also had the problem of mums milk drying up and not wanting to feed them most of the time, so I have had to wean them early, but since I have done this the little one has come on leaps and bounds he is lapping out of the dish with the rest, I made up a puppy porridge with JWB puppy, I made it soft with boiling water them put into the liquidiser to make like a porridge and add some lactol and they are loving it. I found the puppy pieces did not soften as much as the adult.

He still will not be going away at 8 wks though I will keep him here as long as necessary until I know he is 100% o.k. with vet approval. mind you because I have eye dropper fed him wrapped up in a t towel like a baby in a shawl, I dont know if I can let him go to anyone else, its just like a bond you have with a new baby especially as you are up every couple of hours during the night as well feeding.  I am really shattered though, but in the long run its worth it.

The vet also mentioned to me fading puppy and I know he still is not out of danger at 3wks old , every day now is a bonus.

Hopefully your pup will be o.k., but do take it to the vet.

Will the puppy stop crying if you pick her up and rub her tummy? She may possibly have a touch of colic, pups can get this too. If she stops crying when you hold her and rub her tum and falls asleep whilst you are holding her this is probably what it is, or she may possibly have a blockage, sometimes it takes more than mum's cleaning to stimulate a pup to toilet, wet a flannel with warm water and gently rub the pups tum and anus to stimulate toileting or ease the colic.

If she continues after this by all means take her to the vets for a thorough checking over.

Thankyou for your help and advice.  She was always fat, warm and glossy she never looked at all ill or small.  It was just this constant crying.  I felt so bad for the bitch too as she would look at me as if to say 'Well...what shall I do??'
However I have taken the tummy rubbing advice and she is sleeping peacefully now and crossed fingers...is fine!  thanks again :-)

That's good news. :-)

Sometimes it helps to mimic the mum and massage it with cotton wool to make it go to the loo in case she missed her at toilet time.

They are obviously just like babies! My first baby (Daniel who is now 24) spent all his time crying, I do pity the poor Mum, I know what it feels like. Thank goodness my daughter was a content baby! Good luck. Get Mum some earplugs.
