I have a 17month male westie who developed a UTI 2 weeks ago. It took 4 days for the test results to confirm this and another 3 days for a sensitivity test. This revealed that the bugs were immune to the antibiotics he had been given and he was given another lot which he has finished today. He is dry at night now and not whimpering to go out anymore, he is dry in the morning but he is still wetting his cushion in the afternoon - he is on his own for approx 4 hours in the afternoon and when I come home I find the cushion is wet. This does not make sense to me if he has bladder control all night and all morning. I havent been able to pay all the bill yet for the cost of the tests and meds so I am worried about taking him back to the vet and they do more tests. I wonder if it is usual for a UTi to persist after a course of AB's and need another lot?

Yes, it can do.  I know some humans, prone to be troubled by this, who are on very low dose antibiotics for months at a time.

Further update. Dry all weekend and at night. Not asking to go out much at weekend. I'm back at work today, dog walker came in 10-30 -1130 and I came home at 1230 to find his cushion soaked. Surely if he still had a UTI he would have no control at other times such as overnight. I am almost wondering if he is doing this on purpose for some reason!!! Anybody else experienced similar behaviour?

Yup, both my pups wee'd in their beds . They are fit and healthy and it wasn't a UTI.  Do you use a odour remover (a proper one for pets) in the washing machine with the bedding?  They sometimes smell the old place they wee'd and go again, even if you've washed it with detergent.

I never really got to the bottom of why they did it, I thought it might have been marking behaviour, but your dog seems a bit older?  Is he neutered?  they seem to have stopped now.  If he didn't wee in his bed when he was toilet training (like mine did), then it is very unusual for him to wee in his bed, especially as he could go on the floor next to it if he wanted to.  Dogs will resort to going anywhere but their beds, it is instinct beahviour.

I remember my last bitch Ellie, used to wee in her sleep.  She would wake up in a puddle.  She was about 15 months old and spayed at that point.  She simply stopped one day aswell.

It is odd that he only lasted an hour, did your dog walker confirm that he went to the loo? If it continues, you could go back to basics and start the training all over. i.e. take him out at regular intervals to encourage him to go?  Mine go on command now which can be very useful on rainy days!

Have you thought about asking your vet again?  or getting a referal to a behaviourist.  Whatever happens, you cannot tell him off if you don't catch him. You need to find out what has changed.  If you have gone back to work after a period at home, he might have a bit of separation anxiety? If you do get any answers, please update us all.  I would certainly be interested as it is all still a mystery to me!

Yep real mystery. Rory is 17months old and neutered. There has been no change to his routine, he is used to me working and he gets plenty of entertainment by way of dog walker, and stuffed kongs and clever games to keep him occupied. I havent thought of putting odour neurtaliser in the wash itself, so will try that. I am guessing that he must be weeing in his sleep as it is only on his cushion.

He'll probably grow out of it, they have funny stages these doggies of ours!  He could even be having bad dreams! Bless!

If not, I'd get a vet or behaviuorist on the case.

Good luck!
