Topic Dog Boards / Health / Claws - should I worry?
- By bedruthen Date 26.11.06 16:07 UTC
Having just had my 8 year old poodle clipped, the groomer commented on the fact that 5 of her claws ( on the outdside of 3 paws) have broken off high up, or are split.  Is there any underlying condition that might cause this and do I need her checked out by the vet.  Or is it nothing to worry about, any thoughts or ideas would be most welcome, thanks.

I would check her nails out regularly and trim when required. I have to do my dogs as they run mainly in fields so don't wear them down as my older dogs did when I lived in the town and they were walked on the pavement :) Her nails are maybe just getting too long and breaking.

Thanks, i think that might be the problema as since her stroke I have tended to only exercise on the field. I will start pavement walking again and cut back her time on the field. Hopefully you're right!

Came back from our walk today with a limping dog :( Yep, a split nail is to blame  Looks like we'll be confined to barracks for a few days ;) Now, where are those nail clippers........
