Topic Dog Boards / General / 2 great danes - kennel?
- By nic_burton [gb] Date 25.11.06 20:33 UTC Edited 25.11.06 20:41 UTC
I'm currently building a kennel and run  - for 2 great danes- i was wondering whether a 7by 5 shed (converted) would be too big or whether a 6 by 4 would be too small?

I used a 6x4 shed for a kennel in my old house and it was big enough for my rottie cross and Am cocker but they did have a large run attatched.
What dogs is it for????
Mine only went into the kennel if it was raining!!!!

I suppose it depends on how much time they are going to spend in it.

I have a small kennel inside a pen which in total is 6 x 12 foot but they are only in it for three hours max at a time twice a week.

It will have a 25ft run attached - it will be used when i am out (approx 4 hours at most) and to sleep in.  (lots of bedding and heat lamp etc - plus the run is covered) I thought it may be a bit more interesting than my lounge or kitchen!

sounds perfecly fine to me, as bet they dont go in it very often!!!
I had 3 dogs to stay last year when my mate moved, 2 Irish Setters and a cocker spaniel, They were locked in the shed at night and let out into the run in the day. The only time the slept in the shed was when I shut them in at night!!!!!
It was summer though.

I'm not sure my danes would use one - especially not at night. They are creatures of comfort and I wouldn't want them outside. They sleep on their own chairs in the kitchen at night here :D

My kennel is a shed really, and all my dogs sleep in there at night all year round.

The kennel is insulated and I have had electricity put out there, so I have light and a heat lamp which I have on a timer so it pops on and off at hourly intervals all night. I regard it as their bedroom, as they are in the house all evening. Of course when they are muddy and wet from a walk they are out there too, but I also have a large run attached.

We have 2 danes, 2 Weimaraners and 1 Ridgeback who sleep in a shed 10' x 6'.  We have made a stable door and have the bottom half open in the day with a flap over it to stop the draughts.  When the weather is bad they all curl up happily in there with no fighting, so it seems plenty big enough.  They have the run of a sectioned off bit of garden that their shed leads to and are only locked in from 11pm to 6am.
