I half pinched an idea from 'It's me or the dog' the other night. My boy works quite well for cooked liver, but I saw Victoria make some liver treats the other night. I couldn't remember what she had used as the cereal, so I used some bran flakes. I liquidised a pack of liver (15p as it was nearly out of date) added plenty of bran flakes (also liquidised) & a whole egg, shell as well. I cooked it in a baking tray on quite a high heat for 40 mins. Wow, the dogs love it, cut it up while it's still warm & get your other half to do the washing up as it does stick a bit & the liquidiser was a bit messy. A really cheap treat, I have stuck loads in the freezer in little bags. Only trouble is, if your treats are too tasty all the other dogs look at you longingly when you are training!
When we went to Ring Craft which we no longer do one breeder there of Alaskan Malamutes tried to give my dog some Liver Cake, he would touch it and yet he loves a bit of liver in with his minced turkey/chicken and I always cook the liver first don't know whether that is right but I am not keen on giving it raw like the chicken.
I will give your treats a go as I also buy liver as it is being reduced.

I use flour, I also make pilchard treats the same, the boys love them :)

Do they make you hands smell fishy though? I'm not a 'pilchard' person myself, but I might try them if they aren't too stinky!
I used the bran flakes because my dog has a delicate stomach, but I believe that bran works the other way with dogs. Anyway there were no ill effects.

they certainly do make your hands smell fishy - and your house for about 2 days after cooking them

We also make a liver cake with flour and a couple of cloves of garlic so it's really smelly and use if for training treats. It also freezes well cut up into small strips so you can take out just the amount you need for that day. Harley loves it - but I often end up with an extra dog at training class as a springer that goes too can smell it from a mile off and if his owner is doing a recall next to me his dog always comes and sits in front of me instead of his owner :D

We use the liver cake with garlic as well. Its amazing how many dogs we gather when field training.

Ooh could some one put up the recipe for the liver cake and instructions (for a complete dummy who has real trouble with all things culinary... me:rolleyes:) Used to use these with an afghan I handled and they worked a treat, her owner used to make them, but I never found out how!!!! :D

The recipe I use is (and there are many variations):
Liver Cake:
* 375g liver
* 1 cup rice flour (can use different kinds of flour)
* 2 eggs
* 2-4 cloves of garlic
Put the liver, eggs and garlic in the food processor for a minute. Add the rice flour and mix well. Spread out on a large baking sheet and cook at 180 C for 20-30 minutes.
I also make Tuna cake which our rottie LOVES:
Tuna Cake:
* 2 cans of Tuna in sunflower oil
* 1 cup rice flour
* 2 eggs
* 2-4 cloves of garlic
Put the Tuna, eggs and garlic in a food processor and mix for a minute. Stir in enough flour until it turns cake like in consistency. Cook in the microwave on high for a couple minutes until springy to the touch.
- I've adapted the above recipie to make Tuna Cake Biscuits which my dogs go wild for (and are a bit less crumbly). As the name suggests they are more like biscuits and less crumbly than Tuna Cake. Follow the recipie as above but cook until solid but still moist. Then cut into the required size pieces and cook in the oven at 180 C for 10-15 minutes until hard (turn occasionally).

Just tried your liver cake recipe. After Bran trying them ages ago and not liking them I was not sure he would like them.
I cooked them just before I cooked tea and fed them.
They are now cool and have just tried both dogs, they love them.
Bran is at this moment sat in the kitchen looking adoringly at the tupperware box I have put them in. I can't get him to budge, he's drooling. When I ask him what he wants he just point his nose up to the counter at looks at the box.
It's going to be a long night.

If you cook livercake in the microwave how long do you put it on for ?

my ovens broken :( im sure someone said once you could cook them in the microwave.

It all depends on how deap the dish is that you are microwaving them in. I just put them on for a minute then test with fork in to see if the middle is still gooey. If it is in they go for another minute etc... I do mine quite thin - about 2-3 cm hight in the box.

I nuke mine for 8 minutes in a 900 Watt microwave; the cake is 3-4 cm. If you touch the centre it's like firm, dense cake.

Bought some liver for us for dinner, it needs using by today and seeing as I am still ill and not going to want it tonight, I am in the process of making liver treats.
I have Put them in a pan of water with garlic to boil......But for how long????
Then going to put them in the oven to dry out on gas 5 spread out so not touching for about 1/2 hour.
Is there anything else I should do???

I use huge chunks of ox liver, I boil these for about an hour but I'd imagine sliced liver would only need about 15/20 mins. Then I chop it into bite size pieces before baking (can't bring myself to chop raw liver!).

Did it and had all 3 dogs trying to get into the kitchen!!! And that was just with the boiling process LOL
They are now cooked and some frozen.
Just remind me next time
1. Dont cook these when you have spent the day before laying on the sofa ILL and still have a very deluicate stomach!!!!
2. When putting them on greaseprook paper, remember not to push it to the back of the gas oven with the paper over lapping the back of the tray!!!!!
