- By Nikki D [gb] Date 20.11.06 15:50 UTC
Hi,my 12 week lab puppy has his last vac this week and i can not wait to take him out and about, but i was told when looking for a lab puppy not to over exercise them for the first 6 months, could i have some help as to how much is too much? Thanks

Hi,

I used to take my lab out for about 10 minutes per day, just a gentle walk around the block to get him used to his lead and traffic etc first of all.  It is very important not to over exercise them whilst they are babies.

Have fun with him bless him.

What colour is he? and his name??

I would let them have plenty of free running in the garden but restrict lead walking to maximum 5-10 minutes at 12 weeks. Also don't permit him to get overwieght as you will just be putting stress on his joints. Slowly up the exercise.  Free running is the best form of exercise at this stage. Don't forget plenty of socialization, short trips in the car etc.

A good rule of thumb is 5mins per month of age per day

3months x 5mins = 15mins per day
4months x 5mins = 20mins per day
8months x 5mins = 40mins per day

an so on, until they are around 14month mark, then you can build up, slowly extra time on a weekly basis....

For a lab pup.. too much free running is not what you want... yes, a little run around the garden or house is fine, but certainly not out in the open parks or fields etc... so much damage can be done to the hips and elbows by a simple knock, or even a pothole... without wrapping pup up in cotton wool, you can be sensible with excersise...

Hi,his name is Monty and he is  light yellow and gorgeous!! He has brought us so much enjoyment already!!I cant believe he has only been with us a month,i cant imagine life without him!!I am completly in love with him, hence all the probably very obvious questions as i want todo everything right so no harm comes to him.x

I have a yellow lab too called Henry who is now 3 years old and I feel exactly the same as you.  You will learn a lot from him being a lab believe me!  They are such wonderful dogs and so entertaining :-D they are just brilliant!

You sound so devoted to him already but be warned...the feelings only get stronger lol!

Are you planning on doing anything with him, like showing, obedience etc??

Glad your taking Monty to puppy school.  It's vert important to socialise them early on.  I'm sure no matter what you do with him he will make you proud and give you his unconditional love.  Just enjoy him :-)

P.s I always sound like a nutter when I tell people how much H means to me! lol!

Awww bet he is gorgeous!!! I have a lab who is 13 nearly 14, I am dreading the day anything happens to him although I know it will have to happen sometime. Once you've had a lab that is it, they are so loyal and loving.
