Hello,
I am having breeding anxiety! LOL My bitch was bred by AI last season at day 10 after the vet told us she was ready on day 9 but it didn't take. This season we did no testing and decided to "wing it". It was a live breeding and she flagged like mad and stood beautifully for the slavering rutting idiot(LOL) on early morning day 12 and late night day 13. On day 14 late night she wouldn't comfortably stand anymore and we didn't breed after that. This was an outside male we bred to, but now she's home and our male (inexperienced) is just singing the blues still! Could it be we bred her too early again? Books say the sperm stays in there for several days post breeding. Should I take some solace in the fact that she stood beautifully for two breedings but didn't want anymore? This is a bloodhound and since she's never had pups, I guess that makes her a maiden bitch.

sperm can live up to 4 to 6 day so if you mated on day 12 you may be cover up her day 17

Some dogs and especially inexperienced ones will still be able to smell the scent of the female so could still be interested in her for a while. Good luck!

god do i know that at the moment with chase, blue and teyha in,poor tangle she the decory.he love her to its.

:P I read your response rather quickly then briedog, came out then came straight back in cos I only saw 'its' and had to double check it was the 'b' you missed out :D
It was wasn't it? :)
It sounds as though she was mated at the correct time, if she was happy to stand, then hopefully you should soon have the pitter patter of tiny feet.
I loved the slavering rutting idiot :-D :-D You thought highly of the stud dog then. :-D

He's a FABULOUS stud dog, but boy oh boy he was wild for her! I had a bit of the "oh my poor little girl " pangs. LOL
Try not to worry. I have two boys and the one dog very experienced, if I go out to stud however he is telling me she is ready a long while after even when she has gone over. I often think its because he has not mated her that he is displaying this as if he is allowed to mate a bitch he is only after them for about 4-5 days.
If your bitch stood then you should have the patter of tiny feet.

Is he an experienced stud? IME experienced boys will only be really interested when the bitch is spot on, but boys never used at stud will howl the place down right through the bitches seasons. If the boy was raring to go and the bitch willing to stand you have a very good chance of puppies. Your own boy is probably jut yowling because he doesn't know any better.

I have had 2 boys not used at stud and both have been the same - not really interested until the girls are ready, but then stay "on the boil" until the season has ended.

That sounds even better.

I have often found that males will be crazy for a bitch that is or is just going over as they know they have missed/are missing their chance. If the bitch wasn't happy to stand any longer it sounds like the timing was right, and is what I would do.
Here in the UK we can't use AI in the case of two dogs both UK resident so have little experience with this method, and only frozen semen can be imported, so the success rate is commensurately low anyway.

Thank you! You have all helped ease my anxiety a bit. She's such a lovebug, and I think she's gonna make a great Mom. Temperment is an important consideration for me. She's a liver/tan and we don't know if the male carries or not. Maybe everyone will get a surprise! Today she seema to be STARVING and wants to eat the leg off the table! LOL I'll keep you posted on her progress and when I do the ultrasound scan!

OK...update! LOL
It had been 24 days from her first breeding and lately she won't stop cleaning her hind end (vulva). There's no discharge at all, no smell, she is healthy and shiny, but it seems like every time I look at her she is trying to reach her end. AND, it's probably my imagination, but she seems slightly thicker in the middle and not QUITE as easy to reach her backside as it used to be. But again, probably wishful thinking. I don't go for the ultrasound for another week or so. Any ideas why this obsession with her rear?
