My aunt bought a "pedigree" Cocker spaniel without the pedigree. The seller (from Darwen, Lancashire) said she had lost it. The seller said the dog's birthdate was 4 January 2000 and that he was born in the Lake District. Does anyone have any idea how my aunt can check if she has got what she paid for? (though she doesn't regret it at all of course)

Hi

Do you know if the dog is Kennel Club registered?? If it is then you could maybe call the kennel club (as you have the date of birth) and see if they could help you. Also if you know the registered name that might be a starting point..

I just can't imagine anyone "Loosing" a pedigree. So saying, I take it the seller can remember the dog's pedigree name? From that it should be possible to trace it. The age on it's own means nothing. In all possibilites there will be more than one litter of puppies born on that day.

I take it your aunt didn't buy her Cocker from the breeder then? If you knew the breeder's name then it might be possible to check whether they had a litter registered with the Kennel Club for the date of birth. Without the breeder's name, it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack considering how many Cocker litters are produced each year. However, if the litter was not registered (& many are not), then there would be no way to check out the pedigree, sorry.
