Topic Dog Boards / Health / Antibiotics in Pregnancy

My Lexi is 26 days since mating and has been confirmed in whelp.

Poor dear has developed an ear infection.

Vet prescribed an AB yesterday, but on reading the contra indications, they said not to be
used for pregnant or lactating bitches.

I phoned the surgery and they ordered in a different set of drops.  I read the insert and on these
ones it says not to use in the first half of pregnancy.

So what to do?

The drops are called 'Auroto'
ingredients are
thiabendazole 4.0% w/v
Amethocaine Hydrochloride 1.0% w/v
Neomycin Sulphate 0.5% w/v

Canine pregnancy is 63 days so indicated for use after 31.5 days.

Can't leave the poor love with a bad ear for a week.

Just spoke to soem people who seem to think that Neomycin is well known for not being allowed during pregnancy.

So back to Vet yet again.

Just as well I am one of those who reads the inserts in all meds, canine and human.  what about those Vets who just dispense tablets in a bottle.

This link http://www.gsmdca.org/breederseducation/BreedersDrugGuideline.doc
lists these as safe in canine pregnancy:
-        Some antibiotics, including penicillins, cephalosporins,
erythromycin, clindamycin, and Baytril (use during gestation and 1st 4 weeks
of lactation only)

Looks like I will be taking a list to the Vet.

I think you may have a problem with drops - they've generally got steroid in which you can't have during pregnancy - and you may end up with antibiotic tablets. If that's any help. :)

Whatever works to make her comfy, and doesn't put the precious pups in danger

I was so releived that she was, and especially as it didn't take the vet any time at all to confirm it, the pregnancy was easy for him to detect.

Must admit don't like ringing them to moan, but this is too important.  Don't think it is the Vets fault as he rang his supplier asking them to send some drops safe in pregnancy and that is waht they sent him, and he didn't see me before I picked the replacement drops up, but the nurse dispensed them.

Lesson is always check, don't assume the Vet or Doctor in humans will rember/be aware of contraindications and the fact of the pregnancy.

A freind of mine was given AB's when she was pregnant and it damaged the enamel on ehr sons teeth (a known affect of that drug).

Yes I can appreciate that, but it is which antibiotic, some are safe and even beneficial in pregnancy, others most definately are not and can cause a los of the litter or problems in the pups.

clavaseptin

Well contacted the Vet this am, and the important it I missed (in my agitation) was that it should not be used on animals under 4kgs in the first half of pregnancy, but fine on larger.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! on the future pups, that is brilliant news.

Very disappointed that you are having to advise your own vet on the correct AB  Would a natural AB help at all? Hope that you can get the right one sorted out soon.

If you read Brainless' message, they have :)  It's always going to be quite limiting as it does, of course, have to be an antibiotic that the organism is sensitive too.
