hello,

my sbt puppy is 9 month old and she is car sick! It's a bit annoying has we would have love to travel abroad with her and our other dog who love going into the car. is there anything we can do without giving her any tablets? as she gets older is there a possibility that she won't be car sick anymore?! I would love for us to go for walks in different places but at the moment it's not possible as it breaks my heart to see my little angel sick everytime we have to go somewhere with the car!

IME dogs don't get travel sickness like people do, it's more a reaction to them not liking the car. I would start by sitting outside with the doors open, have her loose if in the driveway, or on a long lead on the pavement. You sit inside the car and offer her sweets for jumping in - thats it - in, treat and out in a second. gradually increase this time then start closing the door for a second with her inside, then opening it and treating her. Then you turn the car on for a minute, until you build up to driving to her favourite park for a run. I've had a couple of young collies that were really ill in the car and this cured them both, although it may seem like a very long winded way to do it you'll end up with a dog that loves the car :)

My friens JRT was awfull in the car but with my "bullying" her owner reluctantly came out with me and my mob every morning for a walk in the woods, at first Floydie was sick sick sick, but after 6 months of it she will go anywere now and no problems. And she was 5 when she first started going in the car!! Persiverance and short trips every single day and hopefully she will improve.

You could also try a ginger biscuit or get some travel sick tablets from the health food shop. They are natural & don't make your dog at all drowsy. My GSD used to be sick as a puppy, but he soon grew out of it. I still won't feed him less than 2 hours before a journey. Good luck.

Lots of really short trips, even just a couple of minutes. You could also try putting her in the car and just starting the engine and not going anywhere. Praise her like mad for being good, get her out of the car and have a play or give a treat - she'll soon learn that the car isn't a scary place to be.
Is she secured in the car or free ?. I used to put my dog in a car harness - stopped him moving all over the place and helped him keep his balance - if they wobble about or move too much it can also make them feel bad as they are always fighting against the way the car moves.

Good luck

Ginger is meant to be good for travel sickness. Some dogs seem to travel better in a covered crate, so they can't see everything whizzing past the windows. Might be worth a try? :)

Theres some debate as to wether most dogs are Motion sick (an inner ear problem) or wether its actually anxiety/anticipation ( I understand most people, myself included, believe its more commonly the latter)      raising the crate in a car helps with Motion sickness, and ensuring a gentle flow of air. Some people recommend covering the crate, which would be applicable for anxiety/eagerness/excitedness so I guess you just have to find what suits..and what is the cause.
HTH Good Luck :)
