Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / low protein food for dog with kidney problems

Hi

I am wondering if anyone can recommend any food for my dog.  I have a Golden Retriever who at a year old (March this year) was diagnosed with only one functioning kidney and after a check up today, the vets have recommended a change in diet to try and help as her kidney function readings were a bit high.  The vet has recommended that we put her on a 'senior' dog food for a few months and see if that helps as there is less protein in this type of food and I was wondering if anyone else has had success through this.  Obviously I am willing to do whatever it takes to give her the best quality of life I can as she is still very young and I although she will always have problems, by monitoring her and doing what we can for her now, she will hopefully have as long a life as possible.

Also, I am concerned that possibly some of the dog treats we give her are also having an impact.  Does anyone know if this would be the case?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Depending on the blood values, tripe is useful as it is very low in phosphorous, so consequently I used to use small pieces of dried tripestick as a treat (cut with secateurs ) I would be wary of the majority of standard treats and avoid anything too high infat. A great source of protein also negligible in phosphorous are cooked egg whites, cooked rice too is good. I would have thought it better to put on to a KD diet, designed for dogs with poorly functioning kidneys rather than a senior diet.

Had a dog with chronic kidney failure who I kept healthy and happy for 8 months on a home cooked diet, after she was given 2 weeks, even the vets were amazed.

All the best

Kat
