Today I was in the supermarket with Little-un and we were looking at pop corn packets (the ones you pop in the microwave) as many of you know we have to read the ingredients carefully as Little-un has serious food allergies.  We're used to finding things in the ingredients list no-one would suspect (wheat protein in 100% beefburgers  gluten in milkshakes etc  )  but today we found an ingredient we found truely bizzarre - in a packet of Orville Redenbachers Microwave popcorn, Honey and Butter flavour the ingredients list includes FISH as a flavouring !!!!

Can't see why any form of fish would be used as a flavouring in honey and butter  and none of the other flavours contain fish either

so what bizzarre ingredients have you spotted?? :D

Not exactly ingredients, but instructions on my new electric kettle said 'keep away from water'...........

Adsa's meaty variety crisps, suitable for vegetarians????...........lol.
- By arched [gb] Date 11.11.06 15:21 UTC
I'm sure that a few years ago I noticed that Heinz treacle sponge pudding had fish extract in too. Haven't checked the ingredients recently but it rings a bell - and I remember being shocked !.

Make sure you hide your car keys! :D
- By ShaynLola Date 11.11.06 16:41 UTC
I believe Chicken & Mushroom Pot Noodles are suitable for vegetarians too. Mind you, I'd class them as barely suitable for anyone!!
- By Carrington Date 11.11.06 16:46 UTC
Not noticed anything myself, but they sure are bizare ingrediants I shall keep popping back to find out more. :-D
- By Val [gb] Date 11.11.06 16:55 UTC
Just makes you realise that there is no chicken in Chicken & Mushroom Pot Noodles and it's all synthetic chemicals - yuk! :(
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 11.11.06 16:58 UTC
I read once that cheese-and-onion crisps aren't suitable for vegetarians but smoky bacon ones are ...
- By Isabel Date 11.11.06 17:06 UTC
You can mine your own if you can work out how to do it, I can't :)

- By lumphy [gb] Date 11.11.06 17:25 UTC
Hi

Packet of brazil nuts Warning may contain nuts

As for the fish flavouring wonder if it is the oil as you can get some oils from fish cant you?? Would of thought it would taste fishy though

Re  "Isabel's" pot noodle game post

You have to wait for the screen to focus in on the sign and then eventually it will let you click on "how to play" but the instructions came and went so quickly I only had time to read something about looking for chests and then instructions disappeared - but I can't start another game as still being driven crazy by Funny Farm.
- By Isabel Date 11.11.06 18:10 UTC
I got plenty of time with the instructions and still can't play it.  I guess you have to be high on the chemicals to appreciate it :)
- By Dill [gb] Date 11.11.06 18:43 UTC
LOL

Didn't think there'd be so many   food manufacturing certainly is getting whackier

"As for the fish flavouring wonder if it is the oil as you can get some oils from fish cant you?? Would of thought it would taste fishy though"

No it doesn't appear to be in the oils and fats, which is what I first thought  as it is listed in the flavourings as one of the things they have to declare re allergies   Interestingly, there is no mention of honey, sugar or sweetener (but I may have forgotten them in my amazemant ;) )   I've even tried the website but there's no mention of honey and butter flavour there or of the ingredients used in the product in britain tho it does seem they do different versions for different countries (american website)

I tried a chicken pot noodle once a very long time ago, it wasn't bad, but I didn't like the way my whole body smelled of chicken pot noodle for a week after :( :(   - revolting!
- By Isabel Date 11.11.06 18:59 UTC
I wonder if it is that fish ingredient they use in wine which name escapes me but it is the reason some vegetarians will not drink it.
Chicken pot noodles are soya and contrary to what you might think do not contain artificial colours or preservatives but I do agree with you the flavour is quite an aquired taste :)  The normal ones are very high in fat and calories but have quite a bit of fibre so as snacks go I've seen worse.

They put fish in wine??

THEY PUT FISH IN WINE??

THEY PUT FISH IN WINE??

Flippin nora! what next??

Hang on, are you talking about Isinglas?  the protein used to cause stubborn wine to clear??    If so, and you make your own wine, you can just use a very nice, clear slug of another home-made wine which will cause the whole demijohn to become clear as if by magic :D :D  I'm pretty sure tho that Isinglas doen't actually stay in the wine as it's filtered out with the lees ;)
- By Val [gb] Date 11.11.06 19:07 UTC
That's egg shells I think. ;)

PMSL! :D That comment has brightened up my dreary Monday.
- By Val [gb] Date 11.11.06 19:07 UTC
There must be something artificial in them if they are supposed to taste of chicken but there's no chicken in them.

Oh I'm off to the loo - I've just remembered the one time I tried to eat one. :(
- By Isabel Date 11.11.06 19:16 UTC
Well there will be flavourings, as others have pointed other stuff like chicken flavour crisps ain't really chicken :)
- By Dill [gb] Date 11.11.06 19:18 UTC
Isinglas is fish protein from the swim bladder of sturgeon, albumen is egg protein ;)  Vegans and vegetarians prefer their wines and beers to be free of these :) :)
- By Dill [gb] Date 11.11.06 19:19 UTC
Aye, it's the artificial flavourings I reeked of :( :(  not nice at all :(
- By Val [gb] Date 11.11.06 19:25 UTC
Goodness you're right!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isinglass  :)
- By Dill [gb] Date 11.11.06 19:31 UTC
  :D :D

Although it has to be declared on the ingredients list I'm sure that as it binds with the particles in the wine it all comes out in the filtering, but it would be difficult to prove (or even guarantee)  100% removal without DNA testing the finished wine for fish remains ;) ;)  - now there's a thought!!
- By arched [gb] Date 11.11.06 20:03 UTC
The more I read - the more worried I am when I think about the contents of prawn balls  !

val
- By Val [gb] Date 11.11.06 20:04 UTC
I reckon that they must come from blooming great prawns! ;)
- By Isabel Date 11.11.06 20:06 UTC
:D Same thought.  Different scale
- By Isabel Date 11.11.06 20:04 UTC
Gosh! They must be tiny!
- By Dill [gb] Date 11.11.06 20:04 UTC
ah now....no prawn eh??
- By KateM Date 12.11.06 07:49 UTC
Fish in wine is a new one on me - fish in beer however is pretty normal - fish finings (though the spelling's not right) - which i believe is something to do with the filtering process.

Tis great fun shopping for food in our house - one vegetarian and one coeliac (no gluten at all) - means reading labels is compulsory but most of the time I jut cook from scratch
- By tracey [gb] Date 12.11.06 10:11 UTC
eww fish in wine

some of them are funny ! and agree pot noodles are awfull!
- By Dill [gb] Date 12.11.06 20:22 UTC
Polipetl

3 Wheat-free, one definate coeliac, one suspected, also 2 dairy and 1 chicken and soy intolerant - there's only the three of us living here

I cook most things from scratch too, reading everything in the supermarket is second nature but usually very boring

Have to say tho we eat really good food now and our diet on the whole is really healthy :) :)
- By KateM Date 13.11.06 13:24 UTC
You'll be wondering around the fresh veg aisle a lot then!

Yes, it is definately healthier the cooking from scratch thing.

I'm pretty much ok with the gluten free food - save for gluten free bread which I just cannot make to save my life!
- By Dill [gb] Date 14.11.06 12:23 UTC
Yup fresh veggies are great :D :D

I've never had any luck with making gluten free bread either - it's vile, although I have made lovely soda bread with gluten free flour :) and my first attempts at gluten free biscuits were a disaster, they chinked like wall tiles and OH offered to tile the kitchen with them

We find that we don't really eat bread any more except as a treat (although little-un does have GF bread for lunch in school) and pastry is pretty awful too, although my scones for beef cobbler are famous :D :D
- By Hamster [gb] Date 13.11.06 15:30 UTC
I've been veggie for about 4 yrs and only fairly recently found out about animal products used to clear wine..M&S have really good labelling on all their wines so I try to buy it from there. Think animal products also used in lots of juices!!! some sainsbury's own label juices clearly labelled as 'suitable for veggies' and some not
