Took Mum to vets yesterday and she was ok but still shaky. Temp ok. Vet said all pups out now but gave her oxytocin for retined aftyerbirths as she only passed 2.. All night she has been either trembling or panting. I cant feel any pups there or anything but is this normal after 24 hours. Her temp is still ok. She is drinking but would not eat breakfast. Pups are feedin, no probs there. Advice appreciated before I panic and rush her back to vets.
thanks

Is she producing a lot of milk? I'd be wary of Eclampsia if I were you. My bitch had to have calcium treatment due to this and her first symptoms were restlessness and shivering. If I were you I'd ring the vet for advice or even get the vet out (having him/her come to the house will be less stressful to the bitch rather than taking her into the surgery) just to be on the safe side.

Her milk is just coming in now. Enough milk but not mega amounts. Pups have all gained weight in first 24 hours. Will give vet a call when they open at 9.30. Thanks
Panting is perfectly normal it can go on for days and even weeks for some bitches. Eclampsia can happen before whelping but usually does not show itself until the full milk production at 2 weeks, so although it is something to look out for it is very unlikely to happen now, your bitch will not produce full milk yet so her calcium levels will be ok.
She may not eat as firstly she has had some afterbirth to eat, (not all I know) but that will give her energy anyway, so don't worry too much, try her with some nice scrambled egg made with goats milk a little later, she should eat that up.
If her temperature is normal, personally I would let her be for today, she needs to rest, leave her to sleep, if she does not eat by this evening then call your vet.

There's always the exception to the rule LOL My bitch had eclampsia 24 hours after the pups were born so it's something I'd never rule it out ;)

My bitch came down with eclampsia at 3 days post-whelping; it's something I'm always on the lookout for.

Just got back. Scan showed some placxenta still there but some thickening of uterus. Her temp has gone up since to 39.7 so Vet thinks she may have an infection brewing. She has had antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and oxytocin. My vet will ring this pm to check she is ok.
Thanks for your advice.

Still not completely happy.... She has panted on and off during night, still shivering. Pups have gained arpound 1/2 oz to 1 oz overnight. they are sucking but cant say as I can see much milk if I try to express. How long does it take for lots to be present? No actual sign of mastitis but if you feel around one of the teats there seems to be a 'circle' of little lumps (? glands). No abnormal discharge. Temp is running around 39. She is on Synulox.
I spoke to my vet last night and she told me not to panic unless
1]Temp of 40
2]signs of mastitis or
3] off food.
She is eating but not as much as I would expect. Drinking loads though.
She is just different to any other bitches I have had so perhaps this is normal for her. Any more thoughts please. Many Thanks

If all is going well the milk production will match demand. You don't actually want lots to be present as it is that that can lead to problems. The puppies putting on weight and behaving in a settled, contented way inbetween feeds is the best indication that things are OK. If she is taking food at all and drinking well I don't think you need to panic, they often don't take much the first day or two.

Milk is made according to demand. At the moment the pups are small and not taking huge quantities; as they grow they'll suckle longer and harder and more milk will be produced. The time for maximum milk production is about 3 weeks after birth. A bitch producing excess quantites of milk before it's needed is likely to run into health problems; if there is only a little milk left after the pups have finished feeding and are contentedly sleeping, then she's making just the right amount. :)
Foodwise, offer her light, easily digested foods - scrambled egg, boiled fish and rice etc. Her insides have been squished about while she was pregnant and are now getting back to their 'proper' positions and are uncomfortable, so eating solid meals can be unpleasant. Offer her lots to drink and make sure she goes out to the garden to relieve herself at least four times a day - if she's reluctant to leave her babies, insist she goes out on a lead. As soon as she's made herself comfortable let her off to run back to her family. During this break someone else can change the soiled bedding for clean. :)

Thank you. Its just that i never had a girl who shivered and acted like this before. What do you think the little hard lumps could be?
I am just cooking her scrambled egg now

I would have thought milk glands but you could always phone your vet and ask if this might be any concern. I would think, though, as she is already on Synulux she is pretty much covered against Mastitis even if she did start to overproduce although she could still get rather uncomfortable so you will still need to keep an eye on things. The only big problem I think you still need to look out for, that these antibiotics will not protect you against, is eclampsia but again as little milk is being produced just yet I don't think you need to worry too much just keep observing her.

Also giving Oxytocin can make a bitch very restless, but I too would be looking at her Calcium levels and would be back at vets to check this if she is still like this today.

She has woofed the egg down. I have my vets number so if she gets any worse will call her. She is not actually on call its an emergency vet but she has given me her home number in an emergency. Have an appt tomorrow anyway so will see how she goes.

HI Sue
hope Gaby is getting better, Briar was like that after her pups when she got an infection but the antibiotics worked wonders.

She does seem a bit better so maybe antibiotics are kicking in.
