Can anyone tell me why this breed is not available in the United States. We were researching breeds before buying a puppy and happened upon the German Spitz and fell in LOVE!! Unfortunately, after doing all the research on Charactisitics and convincing ourselves that this is the perfect dog for us we looked for a breeder and discovered that there are none in the US. Is there a particular reason for this or have they just not "caught on". Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at joanbell615@ yahoo.com. I think all web sights on this dog should START with "NOT available in the US" so that one does not research the breed and then fall in love with a breed they can't have. An American breed that is very similar is the American Eskimo dog, or Eskie to his friends(though always white or Biscuit coloured) , here is a picture and the AKC standard http://www.akc.org/breeds/recbreeds/amesk.cfm. Try a google search on these. They seem to be of similar temperament to German Spitz, and seem to be fun loving enjoying Agility etc.

Another breed is the Japanese Spitz, though I beleive these are somewhat sharper, and always white.

pomeranians are also very similar arent they?

Pomeranians were originally GS but were bred down even smaller, and have more pronounced eyes and stop, just more toylike features. When they first brought in the German Spitz I beleive some wanted them to be called Victorian Poms, as that is what the original poms were like.
