hello all!
yesterday i was at a working trials compitition with kia,we were just about to do our search square as we were walking up the small hill kia started breathing really weird it was like she was hyperventilating, beathing really fast and not much air was going in, i stoped and calmed her down it only went on for like 5 sec, i put it down to her being excited as she knows when she is going to search.
later when we got home she did agian for about 5sec but this time she wasnt doing anything just lying down sleeping so i let her sleep in my room incase it happened agian in the night (which it didnt)
i took her down to be let out this morning and as i opened the back door she done it agian but this time it lasted for about 20sec an i could see it was different because she was crying in pain while she was doing it,i just sat on the floor and stroked her and calmed her down till she stoped as she went outside she did it agian but only for about 5secs and she didnt cry.
i am sooooo worried about her ive stayed at home today incase she does it agian.
i dont know weather to take her to the vets tonight, am i just being an overprotective mum or do i have somthing to worry about???
she has never had kennel cough and isnt socialised with any dogs that have it either
thanks
heather

Hi Heather
I know what it's like wondering if you're worrying unnecessarily or not. But as these symptoms have come on suddenly, I think it would be worth getting Kia checked out at the vets, if only for peace of mind.

Hope it's nothing serious.

Heather
I'm with tyby on this one, get her checked out at the vets, and keep us posted with her progress!

It could be something as simple as a throat infection or worse case senario a collapse trachea either way I would have her checked out, at least then if it's nothing serious you'll have peace of mind and if it is serious you'll be in the right place to get her the best treatment.

Good luck and hope she's feeling better soon

ive just got back from the vets and he said that her lungs are ok and that the breathing difficultys are in the top of her trachea,he couldnt feel anything stuck in there so he has given her 2 injections 1 for kennel cough and the other to reduce the swelling.if she doesnt get anybetter by the end of the week she will go in for and x-ray.
thanks for all of your help guys!

This sounds the same type of infection that two of my dogs had, there was no cough but they would have periods where they had extreme difficulty getting a breath.  Very similar to a bad an asthma attack but for short periods.

They were diagnosed with an infected trachea, the vet gave them antibiotics and they were ok in about a fortnight.
