hi
just to let everyone know who has ever made smash ( my kids prefer it to my 'lumpy' real thing!) it is now in a powder and mixes up with one stir. i used to spend ages mixing the little lumps untill my arms ached. its brilliant!

Just remember,
You do not make lumpy mash ;) you make 'Crushed Potatoes' :D :D :D A tip I got off one of the food programmes - one of the top chefs :) probably AWT :D :p

I didnt realise they were different and put mine in a tupperware container with the first lot i bought a while ago for storage, now the lumpy ones are in with the new flakey one and i have to make sure the bumps are mixed as they are...... a bit of a pain!

I have a pack in my cupboard
The first time I made it I made potato soup!!!!!
I havnt tried since!!!!!!
I can make a mean 'proper' potato mash though!!!!!!
Lea :)
You can buy something called a "potato Ricer". You never have any lumps. Makes you look most professional.
Although, Smash was a favourite of mine at Uni!

Sorry - no way can you beat the satisfaction of growing, peeling, boiling, mashing and eating your very own spud..................and you know exactly what's in it !.
Val (spud grower !).

Ning ning ning ning, then they smash them all to pieces............

or opening a tin
After sampling both, I would definetely go for au natrel.... using a ricer though...
Except, I always end up putting way too mcuh butter in... must stop that really!
I agree with Jennyrose, I always use the real thing with a ricer.

Yuck, no, HATE mash made from real potatoes!!! Got to come from a packet or I won't touch it!!!

LOL -'you can't be serious (doing a John McEnroe )' :D :D :D :D

Best to use real potatoes to avoid the preservatives.....
The best way to get lump free mash is to NOT use a masher. Boil the spuds until very soft, drain well, add butter/milk to taste or chives, garlic etc, then mix with an electric mixer....perfect every time!

You're going wrong in trying to make it! Go to M&S and buy it ready done :D

As Isabel has said - try to buy potatoes like King Edwards for mashing. Noot all potatoes are the same and those that are ideal for roasting (intended to stay in one piece) don't mash well :D Also, make sure that the potatoes are well cooked - always test them first and make sure that they are soft :)
Daisy

That's what we do now!!! electric mixer every time! lump free and delicious - I wouldn't eat mash for years following my nans lumpy yukky mess!

I think the secret lies in using a good spud. King Edwards are great and I've recently discovered another good one, the Rooster, a very handsome red potato. These mash easily with a fork with very little risk of a lump, not that I would be that bothered about the odd lump anyway. The taste is great, better than the average spud. I'm not keen on pureed potato either by using a ricer or electric whisk, too gluey for my taste and I would have to be holed up in a nuclear bunker to consider powdered potato :)

Bought Smash once and never ever again. There's nothing like lovely, freshly made creamy fluffy mash and Smash is nothing like lovely, freshly made creamy fluffy mash :P Anyway I thought it was designed for aliens :P :D :D

That explains it -I AM an alien.
I can never get the lumps out either so I just yell and the OH comes and does them for me [moaning all the time about women why cannot do simple things] little does he know!!

He should be grateful you have found a use for him :)

Mine comes ready done from M&S too. I buy loads when I am in there as it freezes so well.
Life's too short to peel, boil and mash. :D

I'm with Isabel- good old fashioned spuds here and make your own mash :-) Would have to be in a nuclear bunker to consider powdered mash :-)

It has to be freshly made too. Warmed up tatties do not work so M&S are out the window. Anyway I thought we were giving them no further encouragement after the Twiggy thingy.

I bet she doesn't eat their Ultimate, cheesy mash. I bet she eats low cal, low carb dried potatoes with soya milk stirred in.
I'd rather be fat LOL

I eat Daisy's ultimate cheesy mashed potato, not mass produced versions :D :D :D If you make it yourself you can put whatever you like in it - cream, cheese, nutmeg, butter, milk - and a low fat variety if so desired - no problems, mashed potatoe is easy :)

You will be welcome in my bunker, Daisy, but slip in quickly so we don't have the door open too long :) Oh! and bring your own sack of potatoes otherwise we won't be opening the door I'm afraid.
Twiggy is welcome too because she can eat the peelings.
