Topic Dog Boards / General / Dont Float Your Boat

- By clutha [dk] Date 01.11.06 10:18 UTC
Hello there, clutha here. I became a member ages ago, but havent posted that often, so thought i would start a fun thread.
We all love dogs, obviously. I love my own White GSD, Akita X GSD, and Terveuran.
I love the 'wolfie look' and a bit of energy.

But i was wondering what sort of dogs just dont float your boat?
Because of, say, the way they look or act?

I would start by saying what doesnt float my boat is:
EBT's. They look a bit too odd for me. I have some friends that call them handsome, but i can only see the opposite!  But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Odd how we see different things, eh?

STAFFIES: After working with loads in rescue, cannot really see the appeal myself. They did make me laugh, but their personality did annoy me a bit, espesh the Chimpanzee and Sea-Lion impersonations! And im not it that short stocky look myself.

GREYS: very sweet natured sensitive quiet folks, but in a way that i find a tad dull and lifeless. Although, i love Lurchers

Please just take this thread as a bit of interesting fun, not as meant for airing any 'breed grievances', as everyone's dogs are special.

thanks, clutha

Personally I wouldn't choose to live with any breed with sticking-up ears, though that's no disrespect to those breeds or their fans! :)
- By rachelsetters Date 01.11.06 11:09 UTC
LOL - why JG - is it the look or will they be always 'listening' :)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 01.11.06 11:29 UTC
No, just the look ain't for me!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.11.06 04:05 UTC
Now I am the opposite it is no floppy ears for me :D  Also prefer coated to short (though could live without it all over the house) but can't do anything jowly because of the slobber.  The look and attitude (machismo) of many bull breeds is definitely not for me.
- By belgian bonkers Date 01.11.06 10:26 UTC
Couldn't live with anything too small i.e, Italian Greyhound, it looks too easily broken!!
- By morgan [gb] Date 01.11.06 10:29 UTC
anything where the nose is further back than the mouth!!
- By clutha [dk] Date 01.11.06 10:34 UTC
LOL Morgan.
mind you, i love a bit of rough'n'tumble with a Boxer.
- By Nikita [gb] Date 01.11.06 10:35 UTC
I'm with morgan on that one!

I don't like stocky dogs like staffs or short-legged dogs, they just look odd to me.  I prefer prick-eared dogs although all 3 of mine are floppies :p

Calm dogs are not my cup of tea either, I prefer whirlwinds of trouble.  I wouldn't go looking for a hairy dog, although I've just taken on a spaniel - but he's rescue, so he's allowed :D

Having said that, there are exceptions - pugs on the flat-face front, and greyhounds I absolutely adore; and I'll always have at least one dobe despite the immense floppy ears.
- By JaneG [gb] Date 01.11.06 15:18 UTC
I'm with Morgan too - great way to describe it :)
- By jas Date 01.11.06 10:32 UTC Edited 01.11.06 10:36 UTC
Most toy dogs are not for me. I'd make an exception for BB'S Italian Greyhound as I plan to have some when I'm too old and and frail for full sized hounds.
- By Missie Date 01.11.06 11:03 UTC
nothing too small, we are very clumsy in this house. even manage to fall over a leo or two

love big dogs, hairy or otherwise :)
- By rachelsetters Date 01.11.06 11:09 UTC
With you Dee nothing too small - like big doggies for sure - trip over the setters as it is  so would crush a weeny one!
- By louisechris1 [gb] Date 01.11.06 11:10 UTC
Not too keen on what I call 'chunky' dogs - Rotts, Labs, or anything with lots of hair that makes it look 'chunky'.  Like the lean look in a dog although Lola our rescue Ridgeback is perhaps borderline chunky.  I let her off though as she is gorgeous!
- By Missie Date 01.11.06 11:16 UTC
my sister had a yorkie once, honest you had to really watch where you put your feet! especially if your'e not used to them  but I do like little dogs, just couldn't have one.
- By shannon [gb] Date 01.11.06 11:20 UTC
Nothing with a tail that curls right up....don't want to see a bum all day long thank you very much (especially on a pale dog!) :)
- By clutha [dk] Date 01.11.06 11:23 UTC
LOL Shannon, that rules out Akita X girl then.
and funny enough, for a girl that exposes her bum all day, she dont half get the arse (geddit!!!) if another dog sniffs it!
- By shannon [gb] Date 01.11.06 13:47 UTC
LOL! Oh Im sure she is absolutely adorable, Im just not keen on seeing bums I guess! Its funny, my husband thinks the same also, although I DO love watching him wince when my friends pug jumps on his knee and sits that bare a*se down on him...he just keeps petting Archie through a very forced smile! I think I just like more of a 'feathered' type coat on a dog!!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.11.06 04:08 UTC Edited 04.11.06 04:11 UTC
Ah but if the mucous membranes are nice and well pigmented it really isn't an issue, and at least you always know they are clean :D  Plenty of coat too to soften the look and definitely not a bare arse o your knee :D :D
- By copper_girl [gb] Date 01.11.06 11:22 UTC
Wouldn't own anything with short legs - might be compared to myself   I like them all, I just wouldn't have one.

I don't like any squashed nosed dog (can't spell bracchi...... :D ), very large dogs (bigger than, say, a rottie), thin dogs like whippets/greyhounds, dogs with silly grooming, wrinkly dogs, dogs with their faces covered in hair, erm ..... hope I haven't managed to offend too many people :D :D :D

Easier to say what I like - medium sized (preferably) athletic, energetic with more coat than a whippet, but not too much otherwise I'd have it clipped off if it prevented it having fun without fussing about it's coat. Basically proper dogs, not fashion accessories :D :D :D

Daisy
- By Harley Date 01.11.06 15:03 UTC
Shannon I'm not keen on the bum on show either :D

Spindly dogs, squashed face dogs  and poodles and pugs wouldn't be on my favourites list either although I have met some lovely dogs from all those types :)
- By Trevor [gb] Date 01.11.06 17:42 UTC
not too keen on terriers myself - they always seem so argumentative  - and don't really like the typical wiry terrier coat - specially don't like it when they trim them so their heads look like bricks ( as in Fox /Welsh/Irish/Kerry Blues etc)

Yvonne
- By Lori Date 01.11.06 18:11 UTC
Not too keen on anything that looks breakable and quivers. I like a dog with enough body to hug properly. Chunky is good, hairy is good, short hair is good, curly up tail spitz dogs are good. Skinny and hyper - nah.
- By Lindsay Date 01.11.06 18:20 UTC
I must admit I'm not keen on Griffon Bruxellois (sp?) and Affenpinschers - the latter esp. have a face I just cannot abide, although I know their owners may well adore them partly for that exact look! :P I'd not walk past one who was in trouble of course, but I'd never actually go out and buy one.

No offence to anyone who may have them, each to their own and all that
- By ChinaBlue [gb] Date 01.11.06 18:33 UTC
I'll have the sticky up ears that you don't want JG - the bigger the better

Love bigger dogs, GSD size pref, in fact GSDs pref  Nothing terrier, def not yorkies, bichons etc. They always remind me of walking fur handbags (no offence anyone). Probably wouldn't have a hound, though I love the look of Bassets, most basset owners 'warn me off' especially the one's trying to get round the park in less than an hour LOL

I love everyones differences...what 'floats' one persons 'boat' is just the opposite of someone else yet we are all dog lovers...

Even though I have mentioned the curly, bum revealing tails, I must say that I do find many dogs that sport this type of tail increibly striking and beautiful, its just that bare bum that gets me!

I will also say what I do like, BIG and hairy, floppy ears, soppy look...lovely!
- By ShaynLola Date 01.11.06 19:14 UTC
Terriers don't do it for me either. Can't really put my finger on why other than they are generally very 'busy' dogs and I like my dogs a bit more laid back.

>I will also say what I do like, BIG and hairy, floppy ears, soppy look...lovely!

That pretty much sums up my ideal dog too, Shannon :)
- By KateM Date 01.11.06 20:24 UTC
Excellent, i know exactly where to send the mob now!
- By Minny_Minsk [gb] Date 01.11.06 19:29 UTC
Jack Russells - not sure if it's just the hundreds I've met, but I HATE their constant yapping :-(

Anything that is a constant source of drool.  It makes me feel sick, especially when a drooly breed suddenly turns their head and almost in slow motion I can see a long string of slobber spinning away from their mouth and normally heading towards me.  Oooohhh, nasty.  I love to see some of the breeds that do this, but just couldn't bring myself to live with one.

Yorkshire Terriers - If I wanted a long haired rat I would have popped down to Pets At Home and bought one.  I like a dog to be a dog.

Sorry, hope I didn't offend anyone - just my personal oppinions.

Helen
- By LucyD [gb] Date 01.11.06 19:45 UTC
I'm afraid I don't like most terriers I've met - staffies are ugly (sorry, just my opinion, I can't help it!), Westies are snappy, Jack Russells are yappy, you name it!! Also don't like Rotties, not the bad press, just don't think they are nice looking, though cute as puppies. I'm a spaniel / setter person, though I like most long haired breeds, so I guess any of the 'bullish' breeds - French bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pugs, etc etc just don't do it for me! Helen, I agree with the drool - someone's Dogue de Bordeaux drooled on me last week and it was DISGUSTING!! I did agree about Yorkies, but actually some of them aren't too bad.
- By Goldmali Date 01.11.06 21:05 UTC
Staffies -cannot for my life see the appeal I'm afraid . Not overly fond of terriers in general BUT in many other cases I can at least appreciate they are very nice looking dogs. :) In all there are SO many breeds I really like and could imagine having, I think a Staffie is just about the only dog I could never ever consider.

I like so many breeds that are totally different to each other -I would love a Chihuahua and I would love a St Bernard and many in between. But in short when it comes down to the choices I HAVE made it's all down to temperament and trainability -I need dogs I can work with, ones that are energetic and always on the go.
- By cakerine [gb] Date 01.11.06 21:57 UTC
he he i think all dogs are cute
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 01.11.06 22:03 UTC
can't do cute and cuddly more like big and dollopy
- By Missie Date 01.11.06 22:06 UTC
There are some little dogs I really like :)
Like the Border terrier, shih tzu, oh and them other white dogs, oh what they called......at least I think they only come in white? It'll come to me later
- By Teri Date 01.11.06 22:23 UTC
Maltese per chance ;)

I like loads of breeds, mainly coated, main criteria is they must be elegant in physical appearance and def no slobber! (woops, sorry Missie et al :P )
- By Missie Date 01.11.06 22:26 UTC Edited 01.11.06 22:28 UTC

do BSDs not usually slobber? perdi drools for England when foods about. is that a breed trait or just her?

with me theres lots of dogs i like woth a different apperance to a collie, but when it comes down to it,i find alot of dogs abit shallow . i like my dogs with complex depthd to their personality, & with abit of owner loyality.

going purely on looks

i like atheletic dogs, nice lines, nice heads,in proportion. nothing too pointy or too jowly. nothing i can hear breathing before i see it, though i do have a weekness for pugs looks.
i also like small fluffy dogs.

But at the end of the day,if they arent a BC whats the point!
- By Teri Date 02.11.06 10:36 UTC

>do BSDs not usually slobber

NOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo :D

>perdi drools for England when foods about. is that a breed trait or just her?

Must be Perdi's speciality ;) unless it's a black thing (don't let Y see this  :P )

- By michelled [gb] Date 02.11.06 11:49 UTC
its ALOT of drool too!
glad its not common!!!!
was abit suprised tbh,she drooled ALL over flynn yesterday,i wasnt impressed!
- By Goldmali Date 02.11.06 18:14 UTC
Ripley drools like MAD when fed, but only then (none of my dogs beg as they know it's pointless). All my dogs have to sit and wait before eating and so it's 6 bowls to go down before they can eat, and Ripley's is the first so she has the longest wait. There's usally a puddle of drool on the floor by the time I give the command LOL!!
- By Trevor [gb] Date 02.11.06 18:15 UTC
Too late !!!!- actually I do have a Groeny girl who drools - she damaged a saliva gland when she caught a stick the wrong way as a youngster ( yes I know and I've never thrown another one since ) she usually waits until I'm all dressed up for work before leaving a  nice snails trail on my clothes -- YUK !

Yvonne
- By michelled [gb] Date 02.11.06 19:15 UTC
lol shes not that unique then!!!!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.11.06 04:18 UTC
I had a 'black un' as my first dog, and no drool, mad as a hatter and too needy for me (well for my circumstances as a busy single Mum at the time she died), hence the change of direction to mega affectionate but independent spitz type.
- By Teri Date 02.11.06 20:23 UTC
Dagnabbit   :D
- By Roughbaby [gb] Date 01.11.06 22:33 UTC
Not a fan of Staffies , that rather demonic grin makes them look slightly retarded.  Don't get the English Bulldog look either, tho' I am sure that many people would look at my walking bag  of hair and neurosis (Rough Collie) and wonder...???
- By Ktee [us] Date 01.11.06 23:21 UTC Edited 01.11.06 23:26 UTC
Bedlingtons are the only dogs i have ever looked at and cringed,i just cant see anything attractive about them at all. I dont like those big banana nosed bull terriers,i would have also said staffies, but i saw one the other day that just took my breath away,he was red and white and just didnt look like the staffs i usually see,and then i realised he was a pure bred with papers staffie,he had a beautiful square head and muzzle and a stocky little body,he was just in perfect proportion, the complete opposite of the gangly looking ones i am used to seeing.

I like 'baby' looking dogs like griffons, pugs, shihtzu's,french bulldogs, bostons etc.I also like golden retrievers but couldnt handle all the hair,i dont think i could ever go back to owning a high shedding breed... I like border collies, but would never dream of getting one unless i was home full time and could practically devote my life to exercising them and going to various mental and physical enrichment classes. An under exercised and under stimulated BC(as with all high energy breeds) is heartbreaking for sure :(
- By roz [gb] Date 02.11.06 01:27 UTC
I've no moral ground to occupy here since I happen to own and love one of those allegedly yappy snappy horrid Jack Russells. ;)

However, if I had to change from one horrid breed to another then I'm afraid Yorkies would come top of my list followed by anything shivery that looks breakable! I like Westies, in theory, but unfortunately, in practice I meet far too many grumpy snappy examples. The worst of which are inevitably owned by hysterical wimmin who can't accept that their little darlings have just tried to take lumps out of any passing dog.
- By shannon [gb] Date 02.11.06 07:54 UTC
Oh I know plenty of un-snappy, happy, un-yappy, lovable lil Jack russells....all of which I would have in my home...ok, maybe there is a teeny amount of yapping from them, but then my crossbreed has a tendency to express his opinion in such a way also.
