Hi all
Have been for a pre-op today before going in for the actual op next week. When they were doing the checks the doctor found something up with my heart. She says its going bump woosh instead of bump bump. Poss valve not shutting properly. Have got to go in for an echo & ecg but wondered if anyone else had experience of this.

So thats whats been wrong with me all this time- been wooshing instead of bumping!!! Hubby will be pleased if it gets fixed lol
I work in a cardiac surgery unit and listen to hearts every day. Normal hearts have 2 sounds per beat, "lub - dup" and the 2 sounds are slightly different, the "dup" being sharper than the "lub". The 2 sounds represent the snapping shut of the heart valves. The aortic and pulmonary valves close together to make one sound, the mitral and tricuspid valves close together to make the other.
A whoosh sound can indicate either narrowing of a valve (stenosis), or the failure of the valve to close (incompetence). If it is the second heart sound then either the mitral or tricuspid valve can be the cause.
Alternatively a whoosh sound can be caused by a hole between the left and right sides of the heart.
The medical word for the whoosh is a "murmur".
The size of the murmur indicates how serious it is. Many murmurs are minor, and need no treatment. Others cause symptoms or require surgery. All people with murmurs must take antibiotics prior to dental work.
The echo will measure the size of the murmur and identify the culprit valve.
The degree of problem with the valve will influence your fitness for anaesthetic.
I hope that is of help,
Cathy
Thanks Cathy. Puts my mind at rest. My dad has been trying to tell me that I have angina- he's just been diagnosed with it!!
Nope, angina does not cause whooshes! When are you having the echo?
Had it today. They couldn't tell me anything as they had to anlyse the results. Just to wait & if anything showing up then they will contact me before surgery next week.
Sharon

Hope it all goes well for you.
Marion
Good luck, and keep us posted!
P.s. message me if you want to know anything else
