It is a long time since I worked in wages, but it is usual for you to go onto a week 1 basis for a week or 2 (or sometimes more  ) until the tax office sends your new employer your tax code details. Especially if you handed your p45 in after the cut off date for their wages department. It means that you will pay tax as if was the first week of the tax year. Any money you overpay will be refunded to you as soon as your proper tax code comes through.

503L1 is a week one month 1 or commonly referred as an
emergency tax code.
It just means that your P45 wasn't handed in (did you complete a P46 instead?)
intime for your first pay to be processed.

As soon as you get your P45 and pop it into the payroll dept..
They will then amend your tax code for the next pay period or will do so when the tax office send them
communication to do so.
If you've been paid in the same tax period by both companies you will play catch up
with tax for the next pay packet in your new employment as both companies will have given you
your tax-free allowances but by the third pay packet you should be back to normal..

This is all perfectly normal :)

Give the payroll dept a nudge as if your P45 was submitted they should be operating
the code that was on your P45 unless the tax office has sent them a revised coding
notification. If they (IR) had have sent a revision then they also send out a coding to the individual concerned.
But they (your employer) may have incorrectly applied the tax code if they had your P45.
Might be worth checking your copy (employees) of the P45 from your last job.

If not ask for your new tax office contact details and give them a call.
You'll need your NI number before you call and also the tax office PAYE ref of your new employer.
The tax office are normally really helpful and as it's not tax year end you should get a speedy response
to your tax code issue. I.E they will send out the correct tax code notification to your employer.

Hope this helps :)
