Benched shows have benches to put your dogs on. ;) They are usually Championship shows where there are a lot of dogs and all dogs of each breed are benched in numerical order together in one area. Sometimes the benches are near the rings, sometimes at the other end of the showground (or at least it seems so in the pouring rain ;) ) You go to the bench to collect your ring number, whereas at unbenched shows you will get you number from the steward in the ring. Dogs must be kept on the benches until it is time to go in the ring, or you are taking them for an exercise break (toilet break :) ) In reality most people go to the side of the ring as soon as possible so that they can watch the judging.

Infact this is incorrect now.  At a benched show your dog does not have to be kept on the bench at all times except if told to do so by a show offcial (maybe even only show manager).

The bench is an ideal place to let your dog rest before and after going in the ring.  Although it's not advised to leave your dog unattended for many reasons.  I personally would never leave a dog unattended and for those times you need to go to the loo, get a coffee and can't take the dog then ask someone nearby just to keep an eye on your dog.

so would a crate at benched shows, to put on the bench be correct or not? (or not necessary)... sorry i must seem thick!                       

Crates on benches are fine if they fit. :)

Crates are fine. With my breeds I use benching chains, which I bought at shows - there's a ring on the bench to attach the chain to, but they don't come with clips so you have to get your own.
