Hi I have an 18 week old English cocker who I feel is gaining weight too quickly .I currently feed him on Hills Science Plan Puppy strictly by the recomended amount . I have noticed that the fat content of HSP is around 18% as is that of royal canine , eucanebia ? and many others .Burns Puppy food advertises 11% fat , I am looking for advise as to wether the change to Burns may help prevent my pup from putting on to much more weight too quickly .

i think pups grow and put weight on quite quickely anyway well any that i have had do,as long as ya give the pup plenty of excercise as that will help it develop as pups grow up so quick as to fat pups i dont no im not a vet so i wouldnt give advice on foods or anything sorry,i posted a question about food myself and i got a load of great answers there is alot of helpful ppl on the forum so im sure ya will get very good info from them. my present pup is about 18 weeks also,shes quite big aswell but she gets plenty of excercise and loves to play on a pull spring

when my staff was a pup she regularly changed shape and would look like a total chubber one week and then all lanky the next after a grwoth spurt.  I've also found that the amounts quoted on bags of dog food are generally too much for the dog and they generally are suggested as total feeding i.e. without treats, titbits and training aids added. My dog is now on burns but wasn't as a pup so can't advise on that.

yea i totaly agree pups are up and down all the time so i wouldnt say any1 has a "fat pup"

Do you mean that your pup is fat, or that you think that he is growing too fast?  If he is fat, it could be that you are feeding him a bit too much.  The daily feeding amounts recommeded on the side of the bags of food tend to be very generous.  I would suggest contacting your pup's breeder to ask what sort of amount he/she would expect your pup to be eating at the moment.  As a breeder myself, I would be only too pleased if one of my puppy owners did that.  Did your breeder suggest the Hills?

The breeders kept his sister and she is a large pup too . The breeder uses eukanebywostit but all of my others eat hills so I changed over  . I only feed 200 g per day as advised and my pup eats his 3 meals in  about 10seconds flat ! he is always looking for food , and is greedy . When I meet other dog owners , they all say he is a dumpling .
My adults eat Hills light .
I just felt the lower fat content in Burns might be a way of keeping him in check ??

Sorry, I don't use complete foods any more - I switched over to the BARF diet some years ago, but I'm sure a Burns feeder will be along soon ....

Sally dont change your pup to Burns,the fat and protein content are far too low for a growing pup.Yes the ingredients are a million times better than hills,and i dont even like burns,but the GA is not appropriate for pups IMHO.

I wean all my Berny pups onto Burns Mini-Bites and they do really well. The big dogs have Burns fish and rice mix with a little raw tripe and bitches in whelp or with pups get Burns Extra. Never had a problem with it but each to his own.
I may just add that some tripe is better that others so do your homework first and find the one thar suits your tripehounds best.
On the caution side the question of exercise, with my breed overexercising has it's downside for hips and elbows so make sure not to overdo it just to reduce fat, better by sensible diet, and carefull exercise, than by just running a young pup ragged.

My bedlie pups were weaned on Burns minibites and JWB puppy mixed, purely because I wanted the new owners to have the choice in case they couldn't get one or the other.  I did add teasps of other things too, egg, cheese, yoghurt, minced meat etc to give variety and prevent fussy eating ;)

Have to say, the pups looked and felt great and were lively too :)  The vet commented on their excellent condition.  All grew nicely, not too fast, not too fat, plenty of energy :)

I have fed the adults other foods but always come back to Burns, they always seem so much better on it, great condition and loads of energy without being manic :) :)
