Topic Dog Boards / General / Cost of X-Rays

Just phoned my vets to find out the cost of having Shady my Rottie x Gsd hips x-rayed.  Not scored just x=rayed and they said £170-£200 .
Is this a reasonable price or is it a lot, wondering if i should shop around .

They did also say the clicking from her hind legs is usuall knees though and not hips so now I'm even more confused

Hi

I would shop around I have just paid £260 for 2 lots of hip x-rays and that includes the BVA fees for both. I am in Devon (on Dartmoor)

I would agree with that.  Have they checked the cruciate?  I would be more likely to ask for a knee X-ray if it isn't the cruciate.

I paid a hundred and Seventy with the scoring two years ago.  Think The Vet was one fifty.

I know shes a large breed, and therefore at the higher end of the scale for these things, but £170-£200 seems an awful lot!!

When my rottie ruptured her cruciate it cost £90 for xrays and that included blood work and various other things as she was a rescue.

wow, I have my dogs chest xrayed every three to four months, and the always take three xrays, she has it done at the oncologists  (referal vet) and she charges me £73, so this has been a shock! Mines a labrador

I have now spoken to an orthapedic vet at another surgery and he said if I didn't start hearing the clicking until after the other vets had tried stretching out her legs on a routine check over and she was tense he feels as she yelped and it clicked as he done it he could have displaced something slightly that is causing the clicking and absolutly nothing to do with her hips.
So he is going to see her Monday morning and see if its something he can just pop back (normal vets consultation fee) if he thinks after a look it is her hips then for him to to x-ray will be £87.50 which is a much more realistic price.
Lets hope its something simple.

A lot of the cost will be the anaesthetic. My vet charges around £100 for the GA, then anything else is on top.

I paid £450 last year to have one of mine hip scored and at the same time 6 plates took of his front legs as he had a problem. Last month I paid £160 to have a BIRD x-rayed!

My vet X-rays the sighthounds without sedation ot anaesthesia and has never had a bad picture yet. With the big hounds it's often a two plate job but the cost has never exceeded £80.

Bl***y h**ll Marianne, thats a lot of money! I was amazed at the costs on the break down for the last lot done on our dog. Thank goodness they are insured - not that that helps for scoring of course :-(
