Hi there- I have been reading the scan links nad wondered when the earliest most successful scan results had been and the latest inaccurate results had been. I had my bitch scanned at 4 weeks 3 days from first mating onher first litter a few yars ago nad it showed that she was pregnant and in due course th epups came on the due day! the number was wrong but the vet said at the time she couldn't say definitely anyway, so I knew there were at least 5 and she had 9 so all was well.
However this time, I had been told that I could scan at 28 days but after reading some of the threads on here regarding inaccurate scan s and 2nd scans needed, i wondered if the first scans were at 28 days nad wheter it might have been too early. have booked my scan for 4 weeks 5 days this time as the vet said pups can reabsorn until 5 weeks. Has anyone had pups reabsorb later than that and were there any symptons or suigns before that might have been linked?
re miscarriage- has anyone 's girl had one of them and if so, when and how was that? I'm not sure this time that my little lady is in pup this time- I know its too early to say in hteory but a couple of things have been different this time so not sure that this will be positive this time. any ideas or responses out there would be gladly received. Thanks.

A bitch can absorb up to about 6 weeks and puppies can die and be miscarried after that or produced as mummified fetuses at whelping.

Absorbtion was always suspected to occur, and it is scanning that confirms it happens more often than used to be supposed.

It is quite possible that bitches become pregnant and absorb even before the normal time for a scan.

A friend of mine had her bitch scanned at 35 days and was told there were at least 5 pups. The bitch gave birth to one single pup and the vet said she must have reabsorbed the others.

Hi

I always have my girls scanned around 5 weeks.  I never go with numbers seen, only ever use it to confirm pregnancy.  I did have one girl when scanned showed 5 pups (1 bigger than the other 4) she went on to have a singleton pup.  The scanners I use depend on there availability, Archie (approx 120 mile round trip) is difficult to get hold of sometimes but is always spot on, one girl had 3 healthy pups an one mumified as he saw in the scan.  The local Agricultural College I've given up using,  have now found a chap 5 mins from my front door who scanned my last girl and was spot on.
Just a note the agri college is the only one to lie the girls on there backs, shave there belly and paint oil on with a brush, even though they are Papillons and are used to being on your lap having a belly rub they used to get stressed being scanned this way.

thanks for all info - so far. when my dog was scanned before they did the same with her- shaved her belly and she lay on her back but she was fine with this as she loves it when i do that at home- ( not shave her belly!! but rubbing it!)

what a shock- I'm beginning to realise how fortunate i hvae been with my dogs so far with no pup or whelp or complication so far.I suppose the law of averages would state that sometime something might happen as with various people here on the forum. Being prepared is one thing but i suppose  you can never be fully prepared emotionally as all these things would be a shock wouldn't they?

Yep I never had a still born whelp until my 8th litter.  I lost two in my second after a day or two and had one with a problem in myfourth that made the whelp unviable and had to put to sleep.

I have had two C sections only out of 11 litters, but this is a breed known for easy whelping and natural conformation.

The sections were from an older bitch (five) having first litter, and one of 6 1/2 having a small 3rd litter.

I must be so lucky it was my first litter and everything went brilliantly with no problems at all, but I did get alot of advice from you guys and for that I thank you all.
