Could people please advise how much artificial insemination might be?

Depends on the circumstances Carole, best talking to your vet who can advise more. They may be able to do it themselves, or they may refer you to a specialist and the cost will vary accordingly. You could do it yourself if the dog is available for fresh AI. However the real question is why would you want to do it not how much it is :) Our KC do not accept the use of AI except under certain circumstances where the dog is not resident in this country etc.
I am looking for this information because there is a litter of 8 puppies sold for double the normal price at £1800, the reason cited is artificial insemination. If someone hd paid recently for this service, roughly how much it cost would be helpful to judge whether this is taking advantage of the public or in fact a fair reflection of the cost.
Hi Carol, what breed are they?
The bitch will be a labrador and the sire a miniature poodle, now please, I know that this could cause a hoohah but the way to get back at absurd prices for crossbreeds is to debunk the enormous costs claimed by this particular perpetrator. Im sure there will be somebody with the professional know how to give a ball park figure

D'ya know, I am actually beginning to understand why people are breeding these crossbreeds if people are REALLY prepared to pay nearly £1000 (or in this case double that!) for a puppy. :( If people really are that stupid to part with that sort of money ........................ supply and demand are what keeps the world turning but what IS the world coming to????? :(
*going off to get lost on the beach with her dogs...........*

I too understand why ,pure greed,my breed is one of this mix and I would NEVER mate my dogs with poodles ,us that love the breed do our best to protect it and to only breed from sound healthy stock .The people that cross breed are only seeing £ signs I can`t see how they care about either breed.

I know how I would feel if it was one of my breeds. :(
Some of us strive to maintain the breed standards. Spend time, money and heartache doing what we think is right, but the attitude of many is for instant rewards. I was taught that nothing good comes easy. :) And here they are, mating their own dog and bitch together, no heath worries (HUH!) and people are queuing to throw good money at them.
I have to maintain my own standards to sleep at night but sometimes I do wonder who's got it right!

I agree with you Val.I won`t interfere with my breed, I love it too much +I wouldn`t be able to sleep at night as it is a pure con .I have someone in my area who bought her bitch purely so she could do this.I refused to sell her one of my pups and I thank God I did.

I really am speechless at this! In fact, I cannot begin to say what I feel. I'll be banned from the Board.

Of course they're taking advantage of the public, I would think £50 would be a fair price for a cross breed!
Hate to think what might happen to the majority of these dogs once they're no longer flavour of the month. :(

Yes that`s the price I told people who asked what price to pay for the woman I know who is doing it.I told her also when I saw her.Hven`t spoken to her since as she knows I am annoyed about this

Good God, a Min Poodle & a Lab????? Poor pups, goodness onlly know what they will be like. I think any vet who has participated in this should be had up by the Vet Council!!!! They are disucssing the ethical reasons behind doing AI on pedigrees, how on earth could this be justified by a vet as a necessaryh porcedure? But, leaving that aside, if any vet was found to do this porcedue, then yes, it is expensive, leaving out the cost of the sutd fee for the semen, you have to pay for collection, shipping (if needed) tests on the bitch for ovulation, and then the implant (if going the surgical implant route) plus pot op care. £2000 would not be an overinflated estimate. Who on earth woudl pay this for a mongrel litter beats me.
bye
Gwen

Breeding not my thing (dogs that is ;)) Question: Won't you get a variety of sizes from this litter? I am wondering if you get a small bitch in the litter who is then bred from then regardless of the size of the sire the bitch could produce puppies too large for her to whelp due to the bitch's parentage?

As with all mongrel litters they will have all sorts of sizes and problems.

Well if they are registered and AI was approved by the KC the cost would ahve been quite considerable in obtaining, importing, stroing, and then having the AI done by a specialist.
About 8 years ago it had cost around a thousand ponds for semen and importaion and storage, and a considerable sum in speiclist vets fes, blood tests and travelling etc.
Thye resulting litter were sold for just a fraction more than the then puppy price, probably no more than fifty pounds more, and the general puppy price went up to that amount for liters born after that event.
I am at present in Finland mating my bitch and it has cost an absolute fortune, yet I won't expect much more for nay resulting pups than f I had used a local dog.
Thank you very much for that reply! Curiously I may end up in Finland in a year or two for an apricot standard poodle stud, oh the problems of tiny gene pools and health questions. Like you the resulting progeny will not be much more than any others, 50 more probably, or I may just have to completely swallow the costs. We used to reckon 2 puppies paid for the mating and rearing ,just done my sums and it came to more than 31/2, we still do it though dont we? Best of British luck in Finland that it is all successful. It looks like 1 puppy of the eight doodles will easily cover an AI without registration, importation and storage which are all so expensive. I believe the person concerned owns both dogs so no stud fee.
Sheer rampant greed!
>Sheer rampant greed!
Got it in one! :(

>double the normal price at £1800
The 'normal' price for crossbreed puppies is between £100 and £150. Asking anything more is extortionate, and actually
paying it is just stupid.

Well travel alone had cost twelve hundred pounds and then the stud fe is the price of a puppy so I reckon it wil cost me in the region of four or 4 1/2 pups to cover costs. My average litter size over the years has been around five pups.
Of course I may end up with nothing for the outlay.
They need shooting anyway for mating a lab without hip score and min poodle without clear PRA certificate, but facts and figure are the way to fight greed. Jeangenie, absurd as it is, you can add the price of a standard poodle to the price of a labrador to pay for a labradoodle with no health checks at all. Frankly, I dont care what the breed is (or none) provided pet dogs have at least a chance of leading healthy pain free lives in happy homes. That chance is taken away from them by this stupidity.

Am confused as to why there is AI involved at all if the 'breeder' owns both dogs?
M.
Aha, edited to add, I'm assuming they think it's easier than a step ladder for the Min Poodle! Of course, he probably did it himself anyway and it's just another lie to add to the mix.
On the relevant board, the likelihood of AI done at home as been suggested, it really isnt that difficult with fresh samples.

Carole g, they need 'shooting' anyway for deliberately mating a Labrador with a Poodle full stop.
Dawn R.
Just as a matter of interest, has this greedy, money grabbing person actually sold any of these puppies? How can people be so stupid??

You have all opened my eyes on this thread, I can't believe this really happens and they can get away with it.
i think that i will find a poodle and put it with my newfie and have some newfiepoos or maybe put a poodle to our bulldog and have bullpoos , or maybe our french bulldog and have frenchiepoos and retire before i hit 40. ( only joking )
It's a sad world!!!
