Topic Dog Boards / Health / Shivering !!!Should I worry ?

Hi, Just wondered if anybody has ever had a dog that has done this. Our One year old BT seems every now again to shiver especially when she is in her bed, she seems fine in every other way and shows no others signs of being unwell. She has done this on and off since we have had her and I mentioned it to the vet when we went about something else and because she wasn't shivering at the time the vet didn't think it was anything to worry about. I dont think she can be cold because she even did it mid summer. Trying to decide if I should go back to the vets or not, anybody had experience of this before?.

only with thunder, a noise she didn't like, or fireworks, ours shivers when she is nervous of something and by shivering I mean shakes from head to toe, but it is only certain things she does not like, she will tremble in the vets surgery but it is nothing like the shaking she has done when something has upset her and she is a labrador!  Old age has brought a great plus she is now deaf and doesn't hear the things that upset her lol

Shivering can be a sign of pain in dogs. It isn't very likely to be pain in your case since she has done it since a puppy and only does it occassionally, but it still might be worth while to ask your vet to take another thorough look.

When Cindyloo is locked in the kitchen she is fine until I make eyecontact with her then she shivers her whole body if I am not in the room and my OH can see her he informs me she doesn't do this at all she will also do this when we are walking and I won't pick her up she did it all through the summer so it wasn't cold she looks awful sad when she does it and it works as I feel awful if I don't go to her and give her a cuddle I think she uses it as I use a clicker she is training me:rolleyes:

I've only ever noticed my staff doing it at night in bed if she has an upset stomach.  She has done it on occasion when she has diarrhoea (sp) and didn't want to get out the cosy bed.  Once I dragged her out of bed she would bolt outside and poo for scotland.

Yep, my Staffie does this. Its normally when cold/nervous or in anticipation of something. When hes chilly or nervous he normally shakes for a little while but when I come in from work he sits there and shivers very occassionally while I take my coat off etc. As soon as I open the gate he runs out like the mad hatter he is! Im sure its nothing to worry about, just a little quirk.
