Why is it that my bitch who is 4 will roll in fox poo when she is out she rolled in a dead rat on sunday the tail was still visible UGH, but whenever there is fox poo in the garden she just ignores it?

Ohh my older two love fox pooh wherever it is, it's the best thing in the world they think, yuk!!  My pup hasn't encountered any as yet but she did take a fancy to some horse muck on our lane.

Hi Paula I forgot to add that I have a male aged 2 and he doesn't roll at all so maybe its a girl thing. Are your dogs male or female?

The only one of my dogs who rolls in fox poo is male! ;)

One of ours loves rolling in it & then coming up to us wagging tail & wanting a love.

Well on our walk today our male rolled in fox poo - first time - and boy does it stink! OH said he wasn't letting him in the car until the pong had gone so we had to let him have a swim in a really smelly pond in the woods. He still stank but of muddy water which was only slightly better than the fox poo.

I had an IW who couldn't resist fox scat (she couldn't resist foxes either, and was on a one dog mission to rid the county of them). She got so used to the consquences of a good roll that she used to come home and step straight into the bath herself after she's applied eua de fox!

I've got 2 dogs and a bitch.  I'm sure they dream about big heaps of fox poo for them to wade through and sleep in, yuk :D

Just be thankful she doesnt eat it as my neighbours girls do! They also insist on handing out big wet slobbery kisses after too

My one rolles in horse poo today.  Whcih is not so bad considering that she recently rolles in a large dog poo.   That was just soooo disgusting.

My older bitch also rolls in it and then eats what's left.

It is quite common for dogs to roll in poo or other 'smelly' things.  I believe the psychology behind this is, that it is a throw-back to their hunting instincts.  By rolling in or smeering themselves with a strong odour it will cover the smell of "Dog", thus alowing them to get in closer to any pray.

I'm glad we humans don't have to do something similar before going to Tesco's.  :rolleyes:

Well my bitch adores rolling in fox scat and regularly does several times a day.  No one KNOWS why they do it, although there are plenty of opinions on it (only the dogs have the facts)! ;D

You get used to the aroma after a while.

Funnily enough NONE of my males have ever had the urge to roll, only my bitches, all three have done it to a lesser or greater degree, my current one ADORES it.

It is her only vice so I put up with it.

My dog had a fantastic roll in some this afternoon. I tried asking him why but he was in a fit of euphoria. ;-) Milo normally gets quite a few strokes while he's out, it was quite funny to see everyone pull away today.

I was musing on this today as the dog rolled in something truly horrible of a dead, squelchy and slimy, fishy nature on the beach. Only I reckon they view poo in much the same way as humans view deodorant and like to change the product occasionally. So, for everyday use their fragrance of choice is Fox Poo. If none is available then they have to go downmarket and accept an "economy" brand like Sheep or Rabbit. And once in a while they fancy something completely different and go for "Aquatic". Or as we know it, something that smells like Barnacle Bill The Sailor.

The hounds were out this morning!  I could hear (and see) them baying in the woods to the right of the hill near me.  I became worried when the hunting horn was sounding from way over to the left and my dog had just rolled in fox poo!!!   The hounds were obviously not under control - goodness knows what was going on.  My red and white collie looks foxy and now she smelt like one - I walked home pretty quickly!!!

Maybe.  It was the distance between the hounds and the horn that concerned me - the hunting horn was sounding over and over some distance away from the hounds themselves.   The wooded area where they were has been used for private shooting and at least once a year holds clay pigeon shooting.  They could very well have drag hunting in progress - but there were no horses in view -  Perhaps the hounds were following their own scent trail!

And does anyone know whether hounds could tell the difference between a fox and a dog smeared with fox poo?
