My circumstances are hopefully changing over the next twelve months. My OH has decided he wants to buy a house and my job is going to reduce my hours but up my pay my OH is even talking about children but doesn't seem to be volunteering for the childbirth so we will have to see how drunk I get for that one. If we move and I have more time on my hands then I would really like a third dog ( yes i probably am certifiable). I have 2 beautiful Cavaliers at the moment but before I met my OH one of my favourite pass times was taking my spaniel for late night walks with my friends Doberman x rottie. I am a total night owl and having the big dog always made me feel safe I don't do this much any more as I only have the cav's so I would love a big but not aggressive dog to walk at night again. My OH would love a greyhound and I do love the rescue greyhounds but we have 2 cats. I've fostered a large male German shepard once who definatley gave me a love for the breed he was the softest thing with my cats and dog and I would have given a blank check for him but we only had him as there was an illness in the family and he had to be returned. Since a young girl I have loved rotties and would consider one but I am open to ideas. I would like to rehome a dog but I think if we did decide on a greyhound we would need a puppy to get it use to the cats. Any ideas anyone?

According to Dog World this week, Rottweiler welfare are having very serious problems with dogs dumped due to all newspaper reports (and people pulling out of taking rescues), and this includes a litter of 12 Rottie pups. They are DESPERATE for good homes so if a Rottweiler is a possibility for you I think no other breed rescue would be in more dire need right now.

One of our rotties at training lives with Bedlingtons and greyhounds and has a best friend who is a Westie. Another rottie we have lives with a medium size mixed breed and a very small mixed breed and he does fine with the little girl.

Oh and I didnt add, I have a Rottie cross and she lives happily with an AM cocker Spaniel!!!!
Lea :)
I would love a rottie but it would need to have its tail if it was a pup if it was from a rescue I would take it with or without but we have looked around a few general rescues and it seems every dog is either no other dogs, no cats or no children so a rescue maybe out all though I would prefer to rehome than get a puppy
awww i love rotties i have a year old rottie cross and i also have a greyhound lets be honest both breeds are in serious need of help my greyhound is black and 10 i got her when she was 7 years old spent 2 years in the rescue center because people were put of by her color although you could get a better ex racing greyhound she loves cats small dogs great off lead house trained very quick and loves people to death and my rottie was 2 days old when i got her thrown out with her brother who a friend had so was both hand reared by us if you did get a greyhound you wouldn't need to have one from a puppy there are more older dogs needing homes where puppies are picked up quick just make sure you say to the center you want one who is great with cats my greyhound lives with cats and i breed one of the worlds smallest dogs (i know your not allowed to say the breed) and the pups race around yapping like mad and the greyhound never bothers
good luck
That is great Cassie my OH and I both love the idea of greyhounds but it does seem silly getting a puppy if there are adults who can happily get on with cats looking for homes. Most of my dogs have come to us because somebody else didn't want them so a rescue would be great.

I have a Rottie x GSD. Rotties and GSD's are my favourite breeds so decided to go for a bit of each LOL. Her and my JRT get on very well and love each other to bits. In fact as I type my big girl is laying beside me while my JRT is standing on her shoulders with her scruff between his teeth giving her a good shake to try and get her to come and play. She has the patience of a saint.

Many ex racing greyhounds are actually catsafe :) Most greyhound rescue centres will assess them and then list them as either not suitable for cats, not tested or cat safe.
Same here, my ex racer is great with my cat though he does look very interested in her as she walks by so I would not leave them alone together but that is just a precaution I feel better taking, in the 2 years we have had him he has been a joy to own and I am really glad we adopted him because he deserves a nice loving home. He is nearly eight and as fit as a fiddle. He is a great companion as I cant move without him following me, as I type this he is laid flat out on my bed (did I mention he is spoilt rotton.:))

I've got a friend who adopted a rescue greyhound earlier this year. She has 3 cats, all of them rescued too, but was assured that her greyhound was "cat safe" (realistically as safe as any dog with any cat) and she's had absolutely no problems. The dog is an absolute joy and he and the cats have settled down nicely without any worrying dramas along the way!
Given that your little girl is fairly small and delicate, Cindyloo, I'm wondering whether a greyhound might be a more practical choice than a rottie simply because of the sheer bulk of 'em!
A good point Roz Cindy did go to a dog sitter while I worked but when she got a shepard cross I thought better of it due to size difference and how bouncy the cross pup was looking good for greyhound I think my OH would love one his Uncle use to race them in ireland and he developed a soft spot for them.

Have you considered a whippet? All the ones I've met are adorable being very sweet and biddable and if I didn't get another JRT I'd definitely get a whippet!
hi Cindyloos mum.
if you contact rottweiler welfare they have many dogs in at the moment, many fostered in a home environment with other dogs & if you are seriously interested they will find a suitable dog to suit your lifestyle & home. they also do get young puppies/ young adults in.
i have a rottie & although he is big i have a friend with cavaleirs & we 'babysit' each others dogs & she often has my boy who gently plays with her cavies, my boy also plays with my cats- including a 6 month old kitten.my dane was bought up with my step mums yorkie (who was tiny) & they got on very well, the yorkie being the boss!!:)
i think if they are bought up with small breeds they are happily able to recognise their strength & size & play well together.
