at what age woudl you consider a dog to be old age. what age do dogs start to slow down generally.

my friends 4 year old black labxboxer is already starting to go grey on the end of his nose and lips. could this be a sign he is actually older or can dogs start to go grey this early?

Pretty much all of this depends on the breed and individual. You can't really generalise.

i agree i have a ten year old greyhound who looks about 20 she is so grey but acts like a 9 month old puppy she is a looney old dog i think it all depends on the individual and the breed of dog

Just like humans, dogs go grey at different ages. In general, the larger the breed, the earlier the 'old age'. Giant breeds will often be considered senior at 7 years whereas medium-sized and smaller ones will be in their prime at that age (despite possibly going grey!) and shouldn't be considered to be 'getting on a bit' till they reach 10.

My 5 1/4 year old Boxer is already going grey...but she does have a dark black mask
for her brindle.
Her mother who is 8 1/2 yo is very grey (much more so than her daughter) she used
to have a jet black mask which contrasted well with her stag dark red coat..she is also starting to go grey in her body coat too but her
daughter hasn't started to yet.
Boxers average age is 10yo - so depending on Labs 4yo is approaching middle age for a Boxer..

My mongrel is already going grey around her mouth and has been since she was 2 (now 3) I think it is because she is constantly stressed about noises and other such so she is going grey quicker than she would if she was calm

My black lab girl is 13.5 and hardly has any grey at all.  The underside of her chinny-chin-chin is grey but people we meet, who are standing up, can't see that.  Just got back from a walk where we met a neighbour and her pooch, mixed breed GSD and some other I guess, maybe Lab.  Sam is yellow lab coloured except most of his face is completely grey and he is 10.

My blue roan cocker spaniels ears and face are grey and she's only 3, whereas her gran is orange roan and nearly 8 and no signs of grey at all.  Both still act very puppy like though.

With my breed I wouldn't consider a dog near old until 10 plus, but those with darker muzzles grey under the chin can start to show up (first as odd hairs) from a year old.  With my own I didn't find grey on the upper muzzle until about 8 years,a dn ahve never had that grey around the eyes look, though Elka did get grey eyebrow whiskers.

I don't think greying neccessarily exquals old age, my 4 year old wsd started going grey about a year ago, she now has a completely grey underneath and around the back legs and is developing grey eyebrows and muzzle. She looks about 10 years old, but she certainly doesnt act it, shes in her prime!

One of the bonuses of having grey dogs is that they age pretty well!!!! :D

My Rosie had a black mask that started to go grey at 1 year old, she is now nearly 7 and her whole face/neck area is now white.

There used to be our bitch and another bitch in the breed who were of a similar age (always competing against them) the other bitch went gray at 4, by the time she reached vetern (7 years) she had a  nearly full grey mask over her red, by this time our bitch had just a couple of grey hairs appearing.  Our old boy did really start going grey till about 8/9 and still now doesn't look as old as he is (lucky thing) and nor does he act it...

My stepmum's mini poodle started going grey at about 2 years old, about half her muzzle is grey now.  My brother's dobe/lab mix started greying at around 4 or 5 I think - she's coming up for 9 now, and is nowhere near slowing down, she's still as energetic as a 9-month-old!

my sisters youngest boxer is 3, and he's really grey-he looks so old. The eldest who's 5 looks at least 10!

I suppose it's just like people, my Mum hardly has any grey hairs, I started to go grey at about 40!
I have a friend who has 2 GSD bitches, they both developed grey muzzles at around 4 years old. Just as well I don't have too many on my muzzle, the ones on my head are bad enough!!

my GSD has always had an old mans face

chase who 4 year old ,my fcr is grey under his chin already his dad did the same at his age and die at 7 3/4 years.but chase mum brie is 7 year old in dec no grey in sight
