Topic Other Boards / Foo / Help!!Ive washed something with feathers :(
- By HuskyGal Date 13.10.06 18:55 UTC
What do I do???
My favourite 'Dog walking' coat is a big 'Puffa' type Snowboard jacket filled with Feather down... snugglier than a Husky's tummy!..and thats snuggly!!!

But :( Ive gone and washed it (It did have a years worth of Dried liver crumbs festering in it )
And now its not 'puffy'.....its gone flat and the feathers have clumped :(

Is all lost???? or can I do re-plump some how??????
HG.
(cold...and deflated!!)

I've heard tumble drying feather filled items and putting a tennis ball in the tumble drier too is supposed to re-fluff?
- By LJS Date 13.10.06 18:58 UTC
Yes the tumble dryer should sort it out if not a trip to the shops tomorrow to buy a new one should sort the problem out ;) :D

Will a rubber ball do???
It does have a no tumble dry symbol ( the box with a circle in..does that mean no tumble dry??)

Oh *wails* why didnt I pay attention when my mother tried to domesticate me!!

cant harm for a few mins though..surely??
- By HuskyGal Date 13.10.06 19:02 UTC
I like the cut of your gib Lucy!!! :D
(but its my birthday soon..cant waste the opportunity of the anual opening of Daves wallet!!! ;) :D)

It only means no tumble drying if the box has a cross over it - no x and you can tumble it.

No it's not lost!  I wash my feather duvets and they always seem lumpy at first. I thought you Scandinavian types would know this ;)  A very thorough airing and a jolly good shake sorts it all out nicely, those feather are great moisure holders that's all and it needs to be completely dry before it fluffs up again, just like a bird :)  As an eco warrior I have never considered using a tumble drier for the job and it has never proved necessary.
- By Lori Date 13.10.06 19:15 UTC
I've washed and dried a down comforter many a time - cool drier and a tennis ball. I guess a rubber ball would work if it didn't melt or smell to rubbery. not that tennis balls smell of spring meadows ;-)
- By Lea Date 13.10.06 19:18 UTC
I wash my feather pillows on a 40 degree wash and then tumble dry on LOW
There are alot of feathers in the tumble dryer but they are nice and plum again :D
Lea :)

I did the same with a down/feather jacket.  If you don't tumble it will not dry, just go mildew and smelly.  I ruined mine.

The one I bought to replace it I tumbled.  Takes ages to dry though. Big hard shakes when dry.

I hadn't heard of the tennis ball, I will try it next time.

>mildew and smelly<

 Oh no!!! come back festering Dried Liver smell...all is forgiven!! :D

oooooooooooh to tumble or not to tumble...that is the question!
(I have to say..normally..Isabel is never knowingly wrong......)
- By ChristineW Date 13.10.06 19:38 UTC
Normally.......but not always!  ;)
- By sam Date 13.10.06 19:42 UTC
i have a couple of feather filled musto jackets & the secret is to tumble dry for 15 mins then take out & shake & de clumo vigorously, then tumble dry another 15 mins & repeat about 5 times. The recommended method is to td with a tennis ball but i never found that terribly successful, unlike the above mentioned method which I have used twice this week!!!
- By HuskyGal Date 13.10.06 19:44 UTC
:D ROFL :D
*and ducks.. incase a plump eco pillow comes my way!!!*
- By Isabel Date 13.10.06 19:44 UTC
err......no mildewy, smelly duvets here thank you!  I did say they need proper airing but I know you don't have to use a tumble dryer to achieve that :)
- By HuskyGal Date 13.10.06 19:48 UTC

>proper airing<

oh come on!! remember your talking to a 'Domestic-chore-a-phobic'
you'll have to define >proper<??
-strapped to my roofrack??
-draped over the airing cupboard hot water tank?
- on the washing line???

Help!!!
- By ShaynLola Date 13.10.06 19:57 UTC
Step 1: Take flat, lifeless no-longer-Puffa-Puffa jacket and dispose of in bin.

Step 2: Console yourself with a Krispy-Kreme donut.  Wait, heck, those coats are expensive....better make it a box (with one or two of the new Marco Pierre White designed capuccino ones thrown in for good measure.)

Step 3: Purchase new coat (making mental note to DRY CLEAN ONLY in future)

Step 4: Maybe better pick up a new pair of boots to go with new jacket ;)

Sorted ;)

 There's a Marco Pierre White Cappuccino Krispy Kreme donut??????

*Disapears in cloud of dust...once beloved jacket thrown over shoulder, trampled and long forgotten in donut stampede*
- By ShaynLola Date 13.10.06 20:03 UTC
I figured that might distract you from the feather disaster....I've thought about little else all day :D
- By Missie Date 13.10.06 20:14 UTC
 Liv, stop flaffing about and put it in the tumble dryer! If you eat all those doughnuts it wont fit you again. and put it on a low heat not too hot - deary deary me

- By Lori Date 14.10.06 08:42 UTC
Oh Krispy-Kreme, what I would give to caress your lovely glazed surface with my tongue.

Ooops sorry, it's been about 5 years since I had a donut. I am weak with do-withdrawls.

Give me the Krispys HG and I'll sort that jacket out for you in my big American dryer. :-D ducks no eco's don't throw things at me, I can dry my closet in one load
- By Isabel Date 13.10.06 20:28 UTC
Ask your Mother what they did before they had tumble driers.  Fail in that I'll be your mother :) Proper airing means somewhere where there is a good flow of fresh air, outside or indoors with windows open, and turn every couple of hours.
- By HuskyGal Date 13.10.06 20:40 UTC
pshaw!!!
The 'beloved' jacket drama is a distant memory now...
I feel like I lost a penny and found a pound!! not only do I get donuts but...
(and you are all my witnesses)

>Fail in that I'll be your mother<

Yay!!! now that means I get to inherit Isabel's handbag collection :D :D :D (long coveted!!)

Ha! You'll be lucky, they are going to be buried with me, although having bought a PRADA bag this very week I can understand your covertessness (is that a real word JG?)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.10.06 21:57 UTC
Yes, but not with that spelling though! ;) :D
- By Isabel Date 13.10.06 22:00 UTC
Of yes, I went for concealed covetessness when HG's envy is clearly overt :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.10.06 22:01 UTC
LOL! :p

So, where do you buy Krispy Creme doughnuts in England??
I keep reading about them [Jennifer Crusie books, brilliant] but have never come across them.
Oh woe is me.

Have a look here

Note the distinct lack of stores on the island of Ireland :( :( Mind you, it's probably a good thing they haven't made it this far. I'd probably be the first case of death by Krispy Kreme :D It's such a treat to get them when I go to London or New York.  I'm off to London at the start of December for a few days...better warn Harrods to order some extra in for then :D :D
- By HuskyGal Date 17.10.06 19:43 UTC
Oooooooh Janet you have to try a Krispy Kreme!! :P
Go for the classic Glazed *Drooooooooool*
I buy one every morning at Victoria train station (freshly baked and warm) to reward myself for another day jammed on a commuter train.... well I have to keep my strength up!
Krispy Kreme are famous for having a red neon light which lights up when the Donuts have just been freshly baked....I'd swim oceans and cross deserts to get to that red light :D :D
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :P
(they are the only donuts that I can hide in my handbag..forget I have them...then find them 4 days later and they are still fresh tasting!!!...ok, so that is a rare occurance ;) )
- By Missie Date 17.10.06 22:53 UTC
 drat! wish I hadn't looked now, I'm hungry :(

yay! found a sugared jam doughnut in the cupboard.........mmmmmmmmmmmm.

I know its not the same Liv, but its from tesco - whaddaya expect?
