For Thor.

He has gone in for a general anaesthetic, so that vet can get a good look at his hips/back legs.   Ever since he had his wicked way with Freya, at the end of August, he has been slightly lame - and is becoming progressively so :(

We know his hips are bad - playing contact sports with lorries when young does not do a dog's hips any good - but he has made it to 8 and a half without any real problems.   But now they are obviously putting him in a great deal of pain.

At the same time he is having his little operation ;) - and also a warty-type growth removed from his back.

I didn't like leaving him there this morning :(

I'm sure he will be just fine, with two problems sorted and just one left to diagnose, you will all feel much better, hope his hip examination comes back ok. *fingers crossed*

Just distract yourself with something, until collection. :-)

Well, he's back home, very very dopey, minus his bits + a cyst on his back and all his nails nicely clipped.......but the news is not particularly good :(

We knew that he has a displaced pelvis, and now, he has virtually no hip socket on the right side.    Although, until the end of August, he has charged along at a rate of knots, and not appeared to be bothered by it at all, it has taken a toll on his knee - and now he has a luxating patella as well - not helped of course by his escapade with Freya.    Vet is not certain just how well an operation on his knee will go - because of his hip, so the x-rays are going to a specialist, for his opinions.     In the meantime, though we are trying him on Cartophren - he's had the first jab tonight.

So, until we get the specialist's opinion, I'm not sure what route we will go down.    Had this happened when he was about 4 years of age, I wouldn't be hesitating putting him through surgery for a hip replacement.   Now, at 8 and a half, I'm really not so sure :(

Hi Margot
Sorry to hear about Thor's problems. My last GSD had both hips replaced, one at 5yrs old and one at 6yrs old. If Thor is in good health otherwise, and could have years ahead of him, I would definitely go for it if it were me. My girl was a different dog afterwards. Who is the specialist you're being referred to?
Kat

Hi Margot,
Just read this and feel for you. Kat seems to have a very positive view for the future though if you decide to op. At 8 years, I guess he could have a lot of good years ahead of him? Some years ago we had a Greyhound who literally smashed up his rear leg. But one very clever, visiting, vet specialist and one lorry load of pins and rods, he was later to win the district hare coursing cup! So don't give up on your boy. Dogs can make us look like real whoosies can't they?
