Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Not for Competition Question
- By paulaj [in] Date 08.10.06 19:26 UTC
Hi all

Can you enter dogs under 6 months old in NFC at Open shows?

I want to enter my older dog in a couple of classes and thought about taking my pup but she'll only be 4 months old.  With nfc not being a showing class i wondered.

Thanks in advance :-)

only at sub group and breed shows can you enter a puppy over 4 months, all other shows are 6 months I believe

Off the top of my head dogs under 6 & over 4 months can be entered as NFC at Breed & Group Open & Ch shows, Agility, Obedeince shows but no others My current KC rules are still in my judging box from my last show I'll dig them out tomorrow if no one else posts from the regs & not memory

Thanks i can't make head nor tail sometimes of the rules, this is for the Border Counties Hound Show (Open) in November, my pup will be 4 months and 2 days on the day.

I must admit that I've taken dogs to Open Shows that aren't entered and have never been pulled up!  It's just so helpful to get your young dogs used to the atmosphere, shame really that they can't be legally allowed to enter NFC at open shows from 4 months really.

Thats exactly why we want to take her, so she gets some idea of what the whole thing is like.  We go to rincraft and take her to loads of different places but to be able to take her earlier to a show would be great.

I entered my girl nfc at a general open show when she was about 4 1/2 or 5 months old. I put her date of birth very clearly on the form so they could see she was under 6 months and could refuse the entry if they wanted, and they were fine about it.

I went to a limit show yesterday that had no less than 9 underage puppies entered totally incorrectly

I have now found the current ruling which was announced in Feb 2004

Breed Shows to allow NFC at 4 months - Friday, February 27, 2004 at 17:13

NOT FOR COMPETITION ENTRIES

The Kennel Club has been receiving numerous requests from individuals and clubs on the issue of allowing puppies between the ages of four and six months to enter shows  'Not for Competition'.

The General Committee has also been considering a proposal from the KCLC Breeds Council that puppies aged four calendar months and over are eligible to enter 'Not for competition' at breed club and sub-group club shows.

In considering this proposal the General Committee were mindful that a similar situation has been in operation at Obedience and Agility Shows for a few years and therefore agreed to extend this to single breed and sub-group shows.

Therefore, with immediate effect four month old puppies may be entered at single breed and sub-group shows with the provisos that the club/society offer this facility.

Kennel Club Regulations will not be altered to take account of this decision until the success or otherwise of this change is reviewed in two years time.

There has been no further update so the above is still current & the R&R will probably be updated from next year

Thanks for that, you've been really helpful thanks so much :-)

Hehe thats made my day now MM!!! :D

I tried to tell the organisers yesterday but the club spokesperson is a very cocky know it all & proceeded to tell me they could accept entries from anyone with any dog & that I didn't know what I was talking about

Even worse the Chairman moved a dog entered in an Open Class into an age class because the owner made a mistake Doh  like no that's against the KC rules (even quoted the reg to him F(1)9.k)again I was told by this KC member I didn't know what I was talkng about !!!!!!
- By ice_queen Date 09.10.06 19:22 UTC
Don't you just love those people! :D  Such a shame really that they go making up the rule's and because they are KC members people will believe them :(
- By Moonmaiden Date 09.10.06 19:28 UTC
If the KC pick up on the under age dogs & the class change they will get fined LOLOL have a feeling the owners will try the same thing at our show Ah well will just have to send their entries back if they do !!
- By ice_queen Date 09.10.06 19:33 UTC
Such a shame as they won't think they are doing anything wrong :(

Lets hope the KC do find out, will hopefully make someone feel very small! :)
- By Moonmaiden Date 09.10.06 19:38 UTC
Oh they know alright as I told them all on Sunday & even quoted the the KC press release(I actually remembered it was in Feb 05 for some reason) & at less three of the owners should have known better-especially the one who thought if you went BIS at a Limited show you get a stud book nimber Silly woman even told the local paper this too after I had told her it didn't:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: She had her Crufts entry returned as her dog wasn't qualified !!!!!!!!
- By ice_queen Date 09.10.06 20:53 UTC
oMG how embaressing tat must have been to have your entry returned!!!!
- By Moonmaiden Date 10.10.06 07:58 UTC
LOLOL her dog never gets a look in at Champ shows for the very obvious reason he is unsound & she's now an expert in movement-lol she advised my friend showing her puppy for the first time(the dog my friend been showing for ages)to move him slowly then judges don't see bad movement !!! My friends puppy moves quite well for a young dog & doesn't need anything hiding !

She now has another puppy & OMG he moves the same way as her older dog !!!
- By ice_queen Date 10.10.06 10:07 UTC
Oh dear!!! lol

I was always under the impression, with bad movement you speed a dog up aswell! (unless of course crabing is the problem)

Did this "expert" not know that young dogs sometimes don't move aswell as the older dog as they are still growing?  I'm not sure about the cavs but especially with setters puppies can move awful compared to what a mture setter would but "puppy movement" isn't knocked in a puppy class much because poor things stil don't have coordination with long legs!!!! :D (very funny to see!) :D
- By LucyD [gb] Date 12.10.06 06:33 UTC
Cavs often are high at the back as puppies, legs all growing different rates I guess! I certainly try to move mine fairly fast - Henry can lose his topline if forced to go slower than his natural pace, and Ellie can start pacing if she starts off too slow. Both move beautifully if moved at the right pace. I would always advise faster rather than slower, as long as the dog doesn't start galloping (another of Henry's tricks!) :-D
- By Moonmaiden Date 12.10.06 08:08 UTC
This isn't a cavalier he's a Rough Collie & the"expert"has a Sheltie that is so cowhocked the hock joints actually knock together when it walks, she moves her dog slowly to keep his tail down & hence hide his cr*ppy backend !

We've got a lot of them in our breed! ;)
